I will be using a ruger super blackhawk .44 magnum with a 4 5/8" barrel. I dont like scopes so i was thinking on a red dot if i dont use the iron sights. I have no experience with red dots other then the ones from tasco that are on the kids 22's so i want to give them a try. Shots 20-35 yards with 50 yards being the max. Can you guys reccommend some red dots for my rig. Thanks Tanoose

I have a 7.5" SRH 44mag and have the same question about what Red Dot to put on it. It came with 1" rings but I will get a 30mm set if necessary. I just dont want some crap that will break when shot a few times. I plan to shoot thousands of rounds with of this pistol. Thanks in advance. I currently have red dot sights from Leupold, Nikon, Burris, and Bushnell. All but the Bushnell are mounted on various .41RemMag handguns. The Bushnell Trophy in mounted on a 12-inch Contender in .411JDJ. The most important thing for long, trouble free use of any glass sighting system is proper mounting. If the sight you purchase is long enough for more than two rings then install another for a three ring mount or even a four ring mount. Sight failure is almost always caused by movement in the rings. I have gutted Millets and Tasco's on a .44. The inner tube has a front glass that is glued in with cheap Korean glue. It is the one set at an angle to reflect the diode light. The glue breaks loose and the glass moves. I have had to re-glue many with steel bed. So far, the Bushnell seems to hold up best, but you might still have trouble with one. This is one reason the best red dots cost an arm and a leg. I love to hunt with them but have eaten up at least 6 in the last few years. Of course I shoot all the time too. Another thing to watch is that the outer tubes are not strong and if you mount a ring over glass, it can break it. I have always wanted to try the heads up display sights but they cost too much too. If anyone has one, let me know how they work under extensive shooting. If you shoot once a month or once a year, a lot of them will last, at least until that big buck is standing there and the dot is nowhere to be found. Remember that the lens wants to stay in place while the gun is coming back in recoil and it doesn't matter if you put 6 rings on the thing. The glass is INSIDE!

I had a 30mm BSA red dot on my Ruge SBH for a couple of years. I finally took it off. It was too easy to lose the dot off the side and not find it quickly when I brought the gun up. I'm sticking to crosshairs. If you can't have fun, what good is life? Were liberals born that stupid or did they work at it?

Ultra-dot or Millett will work. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member

As "crawfish" said above, the mounting is very important. I'd even go so far as to say--try to find one where the mounting system is not part of the Red Dot housing. I'm not a big fan of Weaver style mounts on high recoil guns. But I've had no problem with Red Dot system. I also think the diameter of the sight picture is important and would recommend as large as you can find or install. The small window on the Optima system that my son has on a 45ACP is harder to find the dot in. While Tasco Red Dots are no longer made, I have one of their 45mm ProPoint 5 Red Dots with variable intensity and variable dot size. While I had it on my 44 mag, it was a hoot to shoot and very accurate out to 100 yards I understand that some red dots are even being built with some low power magnification which wouldn't hurt, especially if you don't have varialbe dot size.
