Hallo everybody I saw in the Cabellas catalog that Swift makes a 300grn A Frame bullet for the 454 Casull.Has anyone ever used these bullets on any game. The same goes for the Barnes 250grn bullet. There is some reviews on the internet by noted writers, saying that they had absolutely no expansion with this bullet.[Barnes] At this point I shoot 300grn hardcast bullets and 300grn Hornady xtp mag and I was wondering if these bullets would give me more in the way of terminal performance. Another question I just have to ask.If you shoot a 250grn and 300grn bullet at the same medium[deer, wetpack],which bullet will penetrate the deepest. This will be shot at a 100yds.Will it be the same for a hollowpoint as for a hardcast. Which gunpowder[American brand]will give you the biggest flame out of a 6,5 inch Taurus Raging Bull.My gunpowder that I use now is extremly flame retardent[Somchem].This is the 10 year old boy in me asking this question. Thanks in advance for the answers and replies. Regards Johan

Typically with bullets of similar construction, heavier bullets out penetrate lighter weight bullets. Cast bullets typically out penetrate jacketed bullets. WW296 and H110 usually give a good blast from short barrels. I've not used the Swift or Barnes bullets in my .454 yet, but then I haven't had a problem with the bullets I've been using. The 300 grain XTP and 260 FA bullets work well for me. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

Johan, Here are 2 recovered 45 300gr XTP I recovered from a Ko diak bear. Shot the bear in the back at about 15ft away and the bullets were recovered under the hide on the other side as I was skinning it. MV was 1200 FPS.

Hit this bear with a 300 Win Mag. Finished it off with a 45 Colt.

Hallo Everybody. Thank you for your replies and pictures.I have had my Xtp's come out of wetpack and hardboard shooting packs looking exactly the same.I have never had the perfect mushroom out of these mediums at +- 15 feet, however the sandbank that acts as my backstop produces the most perfect mushroom at about 75 feet.Very strange but reasuring that it still mushrooms at this distance. I have never collected any bullet out of any of the antelope that I have shot, but the exit wounds looks like that there was expansion, but then again,I am no expert at all and my experience is limited.I wonder if there is someone out there that can post pictures of bullets collected out of game that was shot at extended ranges, say 50 yards plus. I am planning on shooting an Eland with my 454 Casull,it will be a shoulder shot at a max of 50 yds[I will shoot out of a bow blind].I would like to know what you guys think of bullet placement,on the shoulder, breaking the leg and taking the lungs with it or a classic lung, heart shot.I would like to anchor the animal ,meaning that it should not run all day,or run that far.Which bullets would you recomend, hardcast or hollow point and in which weight class.I have never shot anything this big so that explains the questions.Any answers or comments would be greatly appreciated. For what's it worth, I would definitely recommend a hardcast bullet. My other suggestion would be a Freedom Arms JSP. Bullet weight should be at least 300 grains. As far a bullet placement, I'm sure you can talk to a PH for that advice. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. Hallo again I read some reviews on Midway on the 2 previous bullets mentioned in my post. The 1st gentleman wrote that he reaches 1500fps with the Swift A Frame using H110.He states that it is really accurate out of his revolver[I dont know which brand]He also states that Swift is the only company that offers a jacketed hollowpoint heavier than 300grns.I believe the heaviest bullet they offer is the 325grn A Frame. He states that it shoots straight through Texas Whitetails. The next gentleman shot the 250grn Barnes bullet through his 8 3/8" Taurus raging Bull into 2 2.5 gallon water jugs @ 25yds.The recoverd bullet expanded to.908 inch and that it had the form of a rough petaled flower.According to him it is extremely accurate. I hope this was helpfull for someone. Regards Johan

I can't comment on the .454 Casull at extended range but at 950 fps to 1000 fps from my .45 Colt Redhawk 5 1/2" they expanded very well on one mountain lion. They penetrated about two feet, basically end to end, stopping in the right hip and entering left shoulder. The cat weighed 125 pounds and 6 1/2". They weighed 224.4 grains, 229.3 grains and 279.2 grains. Sorry the velocity is so general, but the W296 load, done by someone other than me, just didn't burn consistently. According to the Hornady ballistic tables, if your muzzle velocity is 1650 fps you should have 950 fps at 150 meters. My two lighest bullets looked pretty much like the Kodiak bear bullets shown earlier, full shank but no mushroom. The heaviest had the classic mushroom. You can't beat that range of performace. My only Swift bullet use to date was a rifle round in a .376 Steyr, one round one black bear, so I can't help you there.

Hallo 376 Steyer The bullets described above ,are they Barnes bullets or Hornady xtp's.What was the starting weights for those bullets.Did you fire 3 bullets into that cat,if yes then it must be quite a story. Thanks for all the info. Regards Johan
