Had a day out at the range and had a very odd problem maybe sombody can help me figur out. Loaded my the revolver and cocked the hammer and dropped the hammer and had light primer strikes, happened again with another round then the next round it detinated the primer. Not sure why i am getting light primer strikes and it also seems the hammer is causeing the firing pin to strike at diffrent pressures. What can cause this and whats the best fix.

Thanks guys, hopfully you can help me figur this out, All rounds were handloads and this is the first time i have ever had an issue witht he gun, have always shot hand loads

There is a spring inside the grip that I believe controls the impact. There is a screw that can be tightened or loosened. Hopefully others can give more information. Why it is happening now I don't know except perhaps resistance on the hammer itself. Have you tried oiling the sides of the hammer (lightly)?

Check the screw on the inside of the grip and make sure it has not backed out.

The hammer spring is under the grips. The screw is from the outside at the front, low part of the grip frame, not inside. It is the strain screw and must be tight. It is there to allow the hammer spring to be removed by loosening it.
If that is tight and primers are not hit hard enough either the hammer spring is too weak or parts are dry and dirty.
Some cheap ammo has funny hard primers too.

That might be a big part of your problem. The newer Smiths with the floating firing pins don't hit the primers very hard. I haven't tried CCI primers in any of my revolvers, but have had problems with Magtech and even some with Winchester. Switching to Federal primers can make a big difference.

Also I have read on some S&W forums that the dimensions of the firing pins on S&W's have been changed in recent years so they can pass the drop tests of some states.

You would be suprized at how many NEW S&W's have had to go back to S&W because of this.

Cylinder and Slide makes an "old spec" firing pin, which might help - I replaced mine just out of an abundance of caution. (Doesn't cost very much)
