I have been watching deer cross the bottom 55 yds below my treestand that I am bowhunting from. I had a friend over so we took turns in the stand shooting at an old propane tank set where I see the deer. I am using my 317 gr. cast boolit and it was amazing to see the damage to the tank. I got complete penetration and the entry hole was around 3/4". We tore the tank to shreds. There are small dimples around the outside from shrapnel pinging around in the tank. I can't wait for gun season to open to see what it does to deer. This thing is BAD!
Lar45, we can get 7 or more depending on how we read the rules. Kind of confusing at times. I took my grandsons .44 mag Marlin down to sight in and tried a few shots at the propane tank. These will not go all the way through even though the bullet weighs 310 grs. Just puts a little ding on the other side. Might be too fast and the bullet breaks up too fast, but I found some good size chunks of lead falling out of the holes.
I like mine too! Mine is an early production 45-70 model built before MR bought the rights and goes under the name of Sidewinder. Same revolver as you have except with mine I have a second cylinder that holds 45lc or 410. It also has a screw in choke for when I use the 410 for birds. I usually keep 405 gr loads in mine. I will be interested to hear how you do on deer. Mine may go caribou hunting with me next week if I don't use my bow.

Please keep us posted on how it does on deer. I have been wanting a BFR in 45/70 some kind of bad. Maybe this will help me to get one.
I don't have a BFR, but I have taken deer with my contender in 45-70. I started out with speer 400gr loads, but after a few deer were taken with that load I wantted to see what the 300gr hp would do. I like the load and it is more fun to shoot and practice with, and it will do a number on deer. In fact, on broad side shots where at the most a rib was hit, the 300's seemed to bring down deer faster. The 400's will bring down a deer at any angle. It depends on your trpe of hunting style. The 45-70 is a great hunting round, and really fun in a handgun.
I will keep you fellas posted when the season opens. (the 24th) I have 4 boxes of the 300 gr. Hornadys and they do shoot real tight groups. But I can't seem to put the gun down for long and these bullets cost too much. Thats why I made molds because I have been shooting the bejesus out of it and can hardly cast fast enough. My other revolvers are just sitting in the safe getting mad at me. The more I shoot it the more amazed I get at the accuracy and power. Thing shoots through trees. Sure don't need anything hotter for hunting.
