I am sure you are aware that the BFR is a single action as to where the Redhawk is a double action.

But if I were you, I would handle both guns and see which one you like. I have 2 BFR's, a 500 Mag and a 45-70. I love them both, I also have a Ruger Super Redhawk that is customized to 2 1/2 inch and a bunch of other stuff. But for hunting, I like the BFR over the Super Redhawk, but that is my personal preference. Either one will serve you well.

As Redhawk1 sez, handle them both. I myself prefer the SRH thinking it comes back on target quicker than my single actions. After many years of using the .44Mag in both configurations I got the .454 SRH and am pleasantly surprised that despite the power it's amazingly accurate.

i would go the redhawk way i have 2 that are great guns the only problem with them is to do a trigger job from the box as far as bfr's i only handled one and just didn't care for it

You have a hard choice. I loved the SRH I owned but now have 2 BFR's. I had to sell my SRH to buy my .475 BFR and I would not part with it for anything. It will do 5/8" at 50 yd's if I do my part and that is with my home made cast boolits.
But with the SRH I was shooting pop cans at 200 yd's too, from the bench with a scope.
I will not tell you one is better then the other, you have to decide on how each feels to you. I do know that I like the BFR's better for recoil handling and overall accuracy. From gun to gun, the BFR's are more consistant.

My 2p: I like double action for the J-Frame in the nightstand and single action BFRs to hunt and shoot with otherwise. Get your BFR a little bit stoned and it has as nice of a trigger as any other single action I know.

I do my own work and my .475 has a 26 oz trigger and my 45-70 is 19 oz. My SBH and Vaquero are 24 oz.
Don't expect any good trigger from the factory. Surprisingly, the SRH had a great trigger. Not common though. A lawyer thing!

My Marlin/.45-70 has a 15oz trigger I did myself. Only ND I've seen in years was one of my father's friends with it out at the range 2 weekends ago with the .45-70 wheel in it and he said "I didn't even think I pulled the trigger".

I guess sometimes target stands need their legs shot off too...

My theory is that there's absolutely no worry of a SA revolver doubling if you make it have a light trigger. For quick draw it would be heavier but you can't quick draw a 14.5" barrel anyway...

I like 'em both, but prefer DAs to SAs. I've shot bfrshooter's BFRs and they are great guns! They balance well, handle recoil well and are accurate as hell. I have an SRH in .454 and the recoil will get your attention, but it is accurate and I have successfully taken game with it....... Now if you factor in cost, the SRH is a better bargain as they can be picked up used for a song and a dance. Have you considered one in .480 Ruger?? Sorry, had to ask! The others offer the best advice in that you should handle both and pick the one that you like the feel of best. JMHO

And you can do even better on songs and dances with Contenders et al...I may be old fashioned but I like SA BFRs and T/C single shots.

I paid $500.00 for my SRH in the box with the scope rings.......I don't think the previous owner put more than a few cylinders full of ammo through it......

We're talking revolvers, now tom! jumping

Yah, but it's a handgun hunting thread, not revolver hunting Wink I bought a No.1 in Lott like that because the previous owner was afraid of it (yes, I know that's also not a revolver...)

Cheers,
Tom

Actually, tom, his question was about the BFR and the SRH! Wink

There are many slightly/barely used big-bores on the used gun market -- and that is good for us! Big Grin

Thanks guys.I have fired my sons S&W 500 S&W.Recoil was no problem, just way to heavy.I have Contenders a plenty.I have a 44 and 45 Ruger Bisley. Also a S&W 44 Performance Shop Light Hunter.I was wanting some thing a step up from Hot 45 Colt or 44 mag.I was offered a NIB Super Redhawk for $525.00 in 454.Then i was looking through Gun Broker and saw quite a few of the BFR`s.I dont know where I could one to handle around here as I live in the Boonies.I do like single action Revolvers but am willing to try either.I don`t want anything overpowering as I have Carpel Tunnel. So thats where I am at . diggin

BFRs are really mild shooters due to their weight in comparison with some other things in the same chamberings.

Well, if you were closer I'd let you try my SRHs out...... You may want to consider a .480 Ruger SRH. I bought mine new in '01 (it has since been converted to .475 Linebaugh, but that's a whole other story Big Grin). It's a great round that won't abuse you too badly from a recoil standpoint and you can sling great big chunks of lead that punch great big holes through animals. I have an SRH in Casull and it is a heavier recoiling round than the .480 is. My brother-in-law picked up a pristine example for $400.00 on Guns America and another friend found one there for $450.00 with the original plastic box and scope rings. It's a definite step up from the .45s........

.475 bore, 400 grain bullet at about 1200 fps......the .480's got no flies on it....... I think it's a good alternative to the Casull and a hell0falot more pleasant to shoot. Big Grin

I can vouch for that! That .454 kicks a lot harder then even the .475. It is much sharper and raises the gun higher. The .480 actually feels good in comparison.

Well, having put litterally 100s of rounds through the Casull, I can say that it has a different recoil characteristics over all else. It is more of a slap than a push -- much worse that the .480, but I disagree with it being worse than the .475 Linebaugh at full throttle. While it doesn't slap like the .454, it is a lot more abusive with a really heavy shove that fatigues rather quickly.

Anyhow, there is a price to pay for shooting all big-bore handguns! Big Grin

Need to be used or new? If you're buying new, just go to your friendly neighborhood gun shop and put down a deposit and have them order the puppy.

I dont think you can go wrong with any of them!

SRH's, Contenders, BFR, RBH, Taurus, just find the most appealing and go at it!

The only BFR I had any trouble ordering was the .30-30 because their production levels are really low on that one. Not that much demand I guess.
