Factory ballistics look impressive, but handloads seem to be lacking, at least according to the data I've seen. Pretty close to Casull ballistics, actually. Have factory ballistics been exagerated (as they often are) or, like many of the newer cartridges (RUM's, WSM's) are handloaders not able to match factory ballistics with the available powders? Or maybe the data I've seen (in Handloader) is a bit on the conservative side.

I can get a 240 gr. Hornady XTP to go 2090 fps out of my 460 Mag, I can't do the with a 454 Casull out of the same gun. The case capacity of the 460 Mag is 10 gr. more powder over the 454 Casull using H110 powder. So I don't know where you are getting your data from. Mine is from actually doing it at the range.

The one thing S&W went overboard on was the 250 yd deer killing thing with the bullet that was too light. They have backed away from saying that now. I would be very leery of shooting most 240 gr bullets that fast for deer too, unless the bullet is of a very tough constuction. Seems to me that the gun would do better with bullets of 300 gr's and up. You will get higher velocitys then the .454 too. I understand they have a gain twist and I don't know what bullet weight would stabilize best.

bfrshooter, I have been reloading most of my rounds now with 300 gr. hard cast gas check bullets. I have been doing a lot of shooting at 100 yards and the accuracy is great. The 460 does not have a problem with them heaver bullets. I am using 2 different loads for my 460 Mag, the 240 gr. Hornady XTP Mags for deer and the 300 gr. hard cast for bear. I am not loading them to the max, but I went for the best accuracy and performance.

I found not too many companies have developed load data for the SW 460 and Speer techs told me to only use their 300gr jacketed bullets not to use their 240gr as it will shed its jacket in the barrel.I tried to purchase Barnes X handgun bullets from midway and barnes n/a til later this month when they come out with a newly designed 460 bullet.I contacted Hornaday right after the SHOT Show this year and they sent me some sw 460 load data.Cast Performance has load data but not for some of the 45 cal bullets I have for my 45lc/454 casull. When I asked the owners of CP if they had done any load testing in 265gr or 300gr they said no there is data for jacketed bullets in other bullet weights.I'm going to try to develop some CP 265gr and 300gr bullet loads for my Bullberry 460 encore rifle barrel I know they work great in 454 casull.

Redhawk, you are doing it right. Accuracy is always king. I just wish I could afford a .460 to play with. My .475 drops 24" at 200 yd's but is very accurate out to 500 meters. I won't talk about the drop out there but it is funny.

Redhawk, I am in DE as well and recently got a .460. Beyond a doubt the .460 is one of the most fun guns I own and spot on accurate right out of the box with Hornady Custom loads in .460 and .454 Casull

Ken, yes I had a 460 Encore barrel that David White did for me. It shot great with the 240 gr. XTP Mags and the 300 gr. Cast bullets. The 300 gr. Case bullets I am shooting are from Range Rick and Montana Bullet Works. I love the performance of the 300 gr. Cast bullets in my S&W 460 Mag.

Try the Hornady 240 gr. XTP Mag's. They will not shed there jacket, don't use the plain XTP's.

Don't get me wrong Redhawk, I think the .460 is an awesomely powerful round. It's just that the hand loading data I've seen (Handloader)doesn't live up to factory ballistics.
