Bfrshooter, bioman, and I put in a last practice session before opening day of deer season. We did the usual drill and set targets up at varying distances in the woods, and shot them fron a tree stand. The farthest target was 85 yards out (and really hard to see). We shot 2 .475s, a .480, 2 .44 mags, and a .22......... It was a good session, but I can't wait till opening day!!

The toys.......

The stand........

The 85 yard target........

Sounds like great practice.... thumb

I set up my 12" circle gong and fired 3 shots at 100 yards with my 4" M-57 41 mag and put 2 shots with in 2" of each other... beer Unfortunately I missed (shot high) with the first one. thumbdown

It was a lot of fun. I was hitting a little high for some reason, most likely because I sighted this boolit from bags. I need to check them from off hand. I took 5 shots at the 50 yd bottle and hit it in the neck with the last shot. When I went to set it up I had one hole in the ground behind it.
Marko was dead on and was shooting extremely well. I still have to question why he likes rifles! jumping He hit the 85 yd bottle with the open sighted .44.
Bioman had a slight flinch problem that started to go away. I thought about grabbing the ladder stand and shaking it when he shot. rotflmo He shot real good at the closer ranges.
That long range bottle was hard to see so the guys tried a target on front, made it worse so they turned the bottle so the target was on the back. Then the log it was on shined like a mirror when the sun hit it. Just can't make it any harder.
Marko, post a picture of Scott's boolit in the top of the log.

Bioman shot low when trying to hit the 85 yard target and his bullet struck the stump the bottle was sitting on. The 330 grain flat-nosed .44 mag bullet (bfrshooter's own design, penetrated a good 8-inches of seasoned white oak and the bullet still looked pretty good!

That's a really hard medium to penetrate! More proof that you don't need a bunch of velocity to penetrate deeply.

Often a couple of hundred FPS increase will decreases penetration

It most certainly is, but it is also really great practice since we will be hunting deer from these positions. Can't wait!

Wheelgunner, I think that bullet runs right about 1,300 fps at the muzzle. That bullet penetrates like hell! I have some interesting penetration test results that I will be posting soon. The results are eye-opening.

Hello all I fell I most also make some comments on sundays practice. First those were not flinches but well planned bank shot! Big Grin Second the two others shooters made some great shots and I could not keep up. When I saw bfrshooter put the last target out at 85yds I thought this is going to be tough. Third yes things could not have been much better. Good friends, good weather, good shooting, good practice and good beer after we got done. Thanks again guys and it will not be long until its meat we are shooting not targets. Cheers Bioman

Welcome to the forum bioman! You did well with that new rig of yours and even your misses were kill shots on such a small target at that distance. Don't listen to bfrshooter, he's just giving you grief! Next time out the targets are live........ thumb
