I want to try a Trijicon RMR sight on my Freedom Arms .454 and need some input on which model....LED, adjustable LED or Dual Illuminated, and also dot size. I have several Ultra Dots that are great sights, but it's time to try something new. Also, who makes a mount for this gun? Thanks.

I have two of these I bought specifically for the purpose you're mentioning (one for a BFR in .475 Linebaugh and another for a S&W X-Frame in .460 S&W Mag with a 5 inch barrel). I originally bought a 3.25 MOA dot adjustable LED sight for my X-Frame, which I intend for defense against two and four-legged aggressors while doing things off the beaten path. When I got the sight mounted, it was a little more difficult than I intended to acquire the dot quickly when drawing the revolver (from a Simply Rugged Chesty Puller Sourdough Pancake holster - chest mounted).

In a hunting situation, the 3.25 dot is ideal in visibility and size on target to aid in precise aiming. I ended up picking up another adjustable LED RMR in 6.25MOA which is MUCH quicker on target and just what the X-Frame 5" .460 Mag needed. Now I'm much quicker on target with this revolver, although it is not as precise on target (still "minute of deer at 100 yards and a little greater).

The 3.25MOA dot will prove very successful on the BFR, I'm certain, based on how precise it was on the big S&W. I highly recommend the adjustable lED, as I researched the full-time on self-adjusting LED and read mixed results. Some said it seemed either too dim or too bright ("bloomy") in mixed light.

The adjustable LED offers an auto-adjusting feature, as well as the ability to increase and decrease the brightness at your will. This gives you a bunch of flexibility and allows you to tailor the sight to you conditions, or keep in auto mode and let it do its thing (in auto mode, my sights are really good at changing the brightness).

Freedom Arms makes the mount, and I prefer the smaller dot (red) offered by the LED version of the RMR.

I prefer a 3 to 4 MOA dot on a handgun as well.

When using a red dot on a handgun, it just takes a lot of practice, ie muscle memory, to quickly acquire the red dot.

Start out slow, high speed will come with practice.

Once you get it down, a red dot is a lot faster/more accurate than iron sights.

With a handgun, and also a long gun...

Thanks, Vaughn.

The grips were made by Paul Persinger from Dall Sheep horn. It's quickly becoming a favorite grip material for me, but it's proven difficult to find.

You either have to locate someone that's found a dead Dall Sheep and willing/able to register and sell the horns, or you have to pay for a hunt, shoot one, and then cut your horns up into grips for pistols (not likely...)

If you're interested in some black horn grips, I actually have some Sable horns here that I am going to have cut up.

Thank you all for the input. I've decided to go with the adjustable LED, and the 6.25 moa dot. My .454 is used primarily for deer and bear with most shots under 50 yds. , so the larger dot should get me on target quicker than 3.25 moa, without obscuring much of the target.

Remember that the farther away from your eye you get the sight, the larger the dot appears... so a 6.5 MOA dot 5" from your eye on a rifle appears much smaller than a 6.5 MOA dot 28" from your eye on your handgun. The same applies to the 3 MOA.

I encourage you to look at them both side-by-side (at arms length) before you chose.

As it turned out, the local dealer only had the 3.25 moa dot in stock.....looked OK, so I bought it. When the mount arrives from Freedom Arms, I'll range test it and report back.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to shoot Chris' FA in 454 Casull and topped with the Trijicon RMR with 3.25 MOA dot. WOW! What a joy to shoot. The optic made it super easy to get on target and shoot amazing groups at 50 yards. I'd suggest the same results at 100 yards.

BTW: the sheep horn grips are off the charts. Nice feel and they look awesome as well.
