They use Cast Performance bullets, so the bullets should be good. I have never used them, though. If I do want to shoot "store bought ammo" Federal is ussually the one I reach for.

Who's tried the Federal cast core loads? How are they? Anyone done any penetration tests with them? TIA.

I carried Castcores in my M629 Mtn Gun during a canoe trip on the Yukon in 2000. Had to crank the rear sight all the way to the bottom to keep them in the ballpark and ended up with a seven yard zero. At that range they were one-hole accurate of course. They went into a couple inches at 25 yards, which was as far as I tried them. Never had a chance to test them on media, live game, or interior grizzlies but similar handloads with 325 grain .429, and 325 & 335 .452 LBTs tend to zip through deer-sized game (though my zebra stallion stopped two out of three of the .429s). IIRC Cast Performance makes the LBTs for Federal. I've had good luck with their bullets as well as those from Beartooth. Good hunting!

They are excellent in my opinion. I've shot them in my .44 Ruger SBH and I get 1275 fps from the 7.5 inch barrel and accuracy at 100 is ~3". I got full penetration on impala (no surprise) and wildebeest from about 50 yards. Both were shot broadside - the shot on the wildebeest exited the offside shoulder. Another excellent "factory" load for the 44 is the Garrett 310 gr. hammerhead (www.garrettcartridges.com). They are 100 fps faster than the cast cores but don't shoot quite as well in my gun as the cast cores. They are in the 3.5-4" group category at 100. For really big game I think the Garretts would have a slight advantage over the cast cores.
