The other day I was wondering why my 45/70 Contender was shooting like a shotgun , make that "patterns" instead of groups ! Well after blaming myself I saw that all 4 screws were almost torn out of their threads !Another shot or two and the scope would have been in my face !It was a T/C one piece mount and I assume that the contact area is just too small to apply enough clamping force and glue to the barrel !Which mounts have worked for you in the past ?
You should counter bore your scope base holes about 1/32" so you can get all 5 threads in the holes in the barrel and use red lock nut under the base to hold it to the barrel. The recoil of this gun pulled one scope off the barrel putting a nice cut in my head. This is why you counter bore and add red lock nut under the base.
I had that problem with a 445 SM. After blowing 2 scopes off using 'good mounts' and bending a third set of rings I put on a B-Square Mount. Them things are beefy and strong, spendy? ya but worth it.
The T'SOB has 6 screws that are larger than standard. Most have 4. It is also a good idea to get 3 or 4 rings on the scope to help hold it. I went through several mounts/rings on my SSK 45-70 before I went with the T'SOB also. It is such a great strong mount, that now most of my TC's have one.
Cast one, no make that four more votes for the TSOB. TC Contender 4 ring 45-70, Encore 3 ring 50 AK, 4 ring Contender 309 JDJ, and 4 ring FA 454. Never a problem with Leupold scopes.
Thanks guys , I guess I`ll have to get one too !I`ll get a 35 Whelen Imp. for my Encore soon and the recoil (no brake ) will be almost as bad as the 45/70 !
