M.R.CLEAN, If my eyes aren't too old I see moon clip and .50 AE cartridges. So could give more details about this gun. Thanks.

This was posted on Sixgunner as well. The gun has moon clips for 45 acp. The work was done by Jack Huntington.

It looks like there was a change in the gun's finish after the second barrel chopping?

Nice to see someone else liked my design (posted here 6 months ago) to copy it. Right down to the .45 acp moonclips and removal of the scope mounts. Either we think alike or he's borrowed an idea that I have found quite popular here in Alaska. I have worked on about 30-50 cut down or moon cliped super red hawks. I have not cut one that short yet becauseI feel too much velocity would be lost. I feel the velocity figures are greatly over inflated. I don't know what load was used witht the FA bullets, but the 260 partition winchesters out of my 5" only better these numbers by 50 fps and the 4.25" I have built actually run a touch less. I would also like to know how heavy of a spring has to be used with the bobbed hammer. I have found that the spring on skeletonized hammers I have messed with needs to be at least as heavy as stock to reliably ignite casull ammo which makes for a rough pull even after a full action tune. I wondered what one of my guns would look like that short, now I have a better Idea. Looks good polished too. If anyone is interested in seeing the original idea check out the wolverine pack revolver at www.wildwestguns.com Later, AAron

by the way the Wolverine got it's first kill this spring. 6 1/2' 18 1/2" black bear at 25 yds. 300gr trophy bonded devastated near side shoulder socket through heart and exit farside, ran 15 yds strait down hill.. Needless to say I was quite pleased

Sorry guys photo didn't work I'll try again. Hopefully I can find a brown bear or moose to try it out on. Although I just finished a 6 1/2# .458 Lott and that might get first crack. Yes, I am a sick person, over 100 lbs of free recoil energy. Thats what shooting 50 Alaskans and 457 wwg mags ever day will do to you, It just makes you want more. I used to dis-like recoil until I started shooting big kickers every day, I attribute it to a small amount of brain damage every time [ 07-02-2003, 11:16: Message edited by: Aaron B. ]

The 3 1/2" conversion was done by a different gunsmith two years ago. The current Snub nose conversion was converted by Jack Huntington http://jackhunt.hypermart.net/ and he is charging $450.00 for the conversion. The current finish is the result of the factory grey finish being polished off. The snub nose conversion and the welding of the scope ring mounts were ideas that had been discussed back when the SRH 44 magnum version was released. The moon clip conversion on my SSH 454 was based on Aaron B.'s original post and I did mention that on another forum where your boss(?) WildAlaska posts. I had asked him what the numbers where that he or you or both or you achieved on the chrono in Alaska versus what was obtained in Northern California using factory loaded cartridges. I had also asked him to clarify whether or not Wild West had built a snub nose version-thank you for confirming that you did not build a snub nose 454. I believe that my Super Street Hawk 454 is the first publicly displayed converted Ruger Super Redhawk 454 snub nose revolver. Hi, I like it, nice gun. Kev

M.R. CLEAN - For even more fun with this fine handgun, please note that it will shoot .452 muzzleloader sabots with 10MM bullets. Even by Ruger 45 LC BH with 4.625 BBL clocks 1650 fps with 180 gr .40 Gold Dots with light recoil. Let me know if you want specs as there are a few tricks and powders need to be pretty fast.

Those sabot loads sound interesting. Could you post the data or email it to me? Below is a pic of the 454 with a Kydex IWB for hiking/backpacking/hunting made by Jim March. [ 09-08-2003, 01:04: Message edited by: M.R.CLEAN ]

M.R.Clean, how much does your "little" 454 weigh? Have you tried any 350 or 405gn bullets out of it? velocity? Still looks like too much fun.
|
<M.R.CLEAN> |
LAR45, who sells the 405gr bullets? The 365gr Buffalo Bore load is the heaviest bullet that I have tried. I will have to weigh the 454 snub it find out.

awhile back I ordered some 45-70 405's sized down to .452 from Liberty bullets in Oregon. I used these in my Taurus, but couldn't get them to stabilize. I did get them up past 1500fps with 296 out of a 6.5" bbl, but they were loaded way hot. I'm thinking that 1350 would be better. If your into casting your own, then Dan at www.mountainmolds.com can make just about anything you want.
