Hi All, Which alloy works the best for shooting into a penetration box with wet newsprint and or bones... Is there much difference between heat treated wheel weights and Linotype or half WW-lino? I would imagine that air cooled WW would rivet some. I'm headed to the Linebaugh seminar in Cody and wanted to take some different nose style bullets to test. I have some moulds from MountainMolds.com that are the Ogival Flat Point(LFN style) with different meplats in 70%, 80% and 90% at around 340-350gns in 45 cal. I have a SWC in the same weight range also and think it would be interesting to see the difference nose shape and size makes. I'm trying to get enough ammo made to take the 70 cal double pistol also. Should be fun.

Veral Smith owner of LBT put me on to WW water quenched as they drop from the mold back around 1988 and I defie any one to find a better alloy for hard cast bullets. They will not shatter on heavy hide muscle or bone as the Brinell will be around 20 to 22. No mixing and matching required.. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

All my bullets I get from Montana Bullet works are wheel weights that are water quenched and are at Brinell 22. Great bullets. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. Sounds good to me. That's what I nornally shoot, unless I want a softer bullet, then just let them air cool.

Lar45 I would like to see some linotype bullets tested side by side with those other alloys. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

weve done a ton of penetration testing and have found an alloy of 5050 ww/lyno is about ideal. Ive seen water droped ww bullets fracture. especially swcs with a sharp tranistion for the nose to the driving band. Ive never seen a linotype bullet fracture at handgun velocitys but i think the 5050 bullets outdo them slighly because of a little aditional weight. Ive come to use this alloy for most of my big bores that may be called on to hunt larger game then deer.

My friend Wayne had a Linotype bullet from his 500 break up on an Eland. I have never had or seen a WW water quenched bullet break and this includes shooting them into ROCKS. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

For the 50-50 WW-Lino, do you air cool them? I'll try to get a bunch of each cast and loaded. Hopefully if time allows I can shoot them all. My gun seemed to shoot best around 1350 fps, so that's what I load them to.

My understanding is that some of the newer WW haave zink in them and this makes them brittle, but I can not figure out how mixing 50% linotype will make them more ductile, since pure Linotype is brittle. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill
