hello folks,

i recently acquired a kimber target II in 10mm. for the moment i am going to leave it stock and shoot it a bit and see if i will need to upgrade the factory spring using double tap or buffalo bore ammo. i'm looking forward to playing around with it and hopefully doing a little hunting with it (hogs, deer).

i have been recently introduced to the 460 Rowland cartridge, and find it pretty fascinating. so now...i think i need one...
my question, as i'm not an experienced 1911 shooter, are there any brands to stay away from? would a rock island or something cheap like that work with the conversion kit? or do i need a different brand with a stronger frame to handle the abuse of that powerhouse?

i'm not a huge glock fan, but could potentially see the value in buying a glock and converting it as well.

anyone have any recommendations of upgrades for the kimber to shoot full power 10mm loads regularly? i have read of increasing the recoil spring to 22# and go with a stiffer firing pin spring. is this necessary?

again, i am new to 1911's, so any help is appreciated.
thank you

You might want to look at Double Tap's website for their recommendations on their hot 10MM ammo. Contact them if you don't find what you need. I would shoot full power loads minimally for load testing, practice and hunting and use milder loads for target/plinking. Some like recoil buffers and some don't. I have one in my DW Razorback and don't shoot anything but mild loads with Unique in it.

I would think that a forged frame would be recommended for a 460 Rowland, but I've never heard any talk about cast frames being weak. Suppliers of barrels should be able to advise on this.

Cooper, I have 2 460 Roland's I love the cartridge. I would stay away from the Glock conversion as they don't have all the bugs worked out yet. My G-30 converted to 460 has been giving me trouble from day one, and that was a year ago.

As for 1911's I was told by Jonny Rowland to pick one with a small firing pin, his reason for that was potential primer flow at 42k psi the smaller hole is more reliable. He recommended either a Springfield or Kimber. I picked a Springfield 1911 and couldn't be happier. It feeds anything I load it with, and I have never had an ftf. The recoil is less than a compact 45 acp. With 11 grains of longshot under a 230 it is one of the most accurate pistols I own. That load gets me just under 1400 fps.

I have three years experience with my 1911 in 460, I have over two thousand rounds through it and it has been a trouble free, accurate hard hitting pistol.

A good source of info on the 460 Rowland is Clark Custom Guns website. They recommend staying away from the lower end Phillipine made 1911 clones (Auto Ord, Rock Island, etc.). The frame rails are softer on them than is ideal. Clark recommends Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Sig. They also have some good load data on the site.

I have a Glock 21 converted to 460, and it has been great. My dad has a Springfield XD with the conversion. No feeding or cycling issues with either one. After working up a load similar to Doubledown's with 230's, I moved up to hardcast 265's. My first load hit 1250fps, and I stopped trying. That has proven to be a great deer/hog load.

Bummer on the G30 conversion. That would be a really easy to carry pistol with a lot of wallop.

I know, that was my original thinking. I think the shorter slide (compared to your 21) has too much velocity and is skipping right over the next cartridge in the magazine so fast that it doesn't pick it up.

I tried double magazine springs, they cut my capacity to 8 or 9 rounds and still only 60% reliable. I used the kit from Rowland with the brake on the muzzle, heavier recoil spring and mag spring supplied in the conversion kit. I still had no luck at all.

I was told to send it back and they would make it right...but the communist state I live in right now makes the gun illegal because of the evil threaded barrel. I will be living in a free state by spring and send it back then.

I'm glad your G 21 is working well, it is a kick ass cartridge and having the mag capacity that you do in the 21 you are carrying a lot of horsepower on your hip. BOOM

I have a custom 1911 in 10mm with a deltapoint 3.5 red dot its a fine shooter. Im now considering using my much customized 1911 Norinco for a clark 460 Rowland . How good are the standard 45 acp loads in the 460 Rowland and do they recommend using them ? tks ken

45 ACP is a shorter case, so the extractor holds the case tight to the slide and more or less "headspaces" the cartridge. If your extractor holds really tight, you should be fine shooting ACP in a Rowland barrel. If it is a little loose, it will probably not be reliable.

Stout 45 ACP loads work fine in the Glock. I don't think that any loads with bullets lighter than 230gr will cycle the slide reliably.

The recoil spring is a bit stouter. I would have to check, but I think it is 20-22 pounds for the conversion and something like 17 for the stock recoil spring.
