That's a good advice, Critter. I have a set of fiber optics on the 30Herritt bbl for my Contender and they do light up bright, especially when aiming into the trees after sunset. Trouble is they aren't much good for target shooting, mainly bullseye. Of course, most guys your age are into cowboy shooting (which is both understandable and good) but I don't believe the fiberoptics sights would be legal, given their emphasis on authenticity.

I have pretty well given up on long barreled handguns without scopes. I have a 14 inch Contender in 7-30 Waters and a 10 inch .44 Magnum barrel for the same setup. They will be scoped for serious hunting use. As everyday hunting guns, I now use 4" and 6 to 6 1/2" barreled guns. The front and rear sights can be brought into focus more easily the shorter the total separation. As to the eye glasses, I told my eye doctor I was a shooter and needed a bifocal or trifocal with a focus at arm's length. This same setup helps me in wound care as a therapist too, as well as those moster computers we all seem to use these days. If you are using a scope go with a variable power scope with adjustable objective.

I'm 65 and have had cataract surgery. Where for the first 63 years of my life I was myopic (after 30 yrs, about 20-400!), I am now far-sighted. It is an awful change to get used to but is better in many ways for shooting. I still use irons a lot and have found that focusing on the 3 things, rear and front sight and target, is just not possible., Fortunately it is not necessary either. The critical thing is the front sight blade. Focus on it and let the rear sight don what it will. You can still center the blade with ease. If you are far sighted, the target should be pretty clear. I just takes some getting used to. Incidentally, I have to use a 2.5 diopter for reading.
