About 10 after 5 tonight ... a bunch of doe and yearlings came in. Have been watching them for a while and one older doe is (was) a nasty old lady. I bino'd them to make sure I had located the correct one, then hit her with a Remington 210 gr SP for an M57 6" 41 Mag fitted with a 2x Leupold scope. Distance was 65 yards. She went straight down Wink

Have now gotten deer with bow, rifle, and handgun. ML season is next week Wink so there is a chance to do the circuit. I do enjoy trying to make it Wink

Whitworth,

I actually do have one ... it's not one of them purist rigs though. I'm simply not a purist about these things. Just adds a week I can hunt! In WV we're allowed to use scoped in-lines, so I use a 50 caliber Remington SS in-line with a 3-9 scope on it. Has taken several deer over the years.

I got into bowhunting while married to my first wife. Six extra weeks out of the house.

I wouldn't use a 38 Spcl anyway ... might try a 38 Super racegun someday.

Have used a 40 S&W 1911-based racegun fitten with an EoTech dot sight and it worked fine. In fact the results were darned scary! A 135 gr Nosler HP at 1500 fps absolutely pulverized everything above the diaphragm of the deer. I can't imagine having an accident with such a thing.

38 Spcl ... I don't think so. Wouldn't be legal in WV anyway.

Mike your comment on the 40 is very interesting. Would you favor the lighter (135 grain) over , say the 180? If so, why?
The 38 Super is also interesting because you can run a 130 grain very fast (around 1400 fps) but I have only seen FMJs in that weight.
Peter.

Peter,

Was "retired" in 2001 when the company I worked for was bought by Dow. That fall I looked for the M57 to deer hunt with it and could not find the scope mount. Had been taken off and put "someplace." The only pistol in the safe that met the State's requirements that had some sort of optical sight happened to be a single stack 40 S&W comped racegun that I'd built for giggles during the time that IPSC was considering a 40 caliber floor for Major. They never did, but I had worked up loads for this piece and it was sighed in. The pistol was built to run 40 S&W ammo that was loaded to almost the same length as 10mm. Lots of advantages for doing that ... ramped barrel, short strong case, easy extraction and ejection. The loads were worked up to see how hot I could go and how that affected the functioning of the compensator. Needless to say, one does not need to push a 135 at 1500+ fps to make major. Turns out the gun worked as a racegun fine even at 1350 fps. The bullet weight was chosen to allow the comp to work well. Muzzle jump was slightly more than a Super but not much and it was pretty competitive.

Were I going to use that pistol for deer again, I'd look for a 165 gr bullet as the 135s are too fragile and are explosive at impact.

A 130 gr Super bullet needed to make 1330 fps to make the old major with a little spare. A 125 gr bullet needed to make 1440 fps. Were I going to use the Super for that I'd probably go for a 147 XTP or a 125 Hornady SP for .357 after running them thru a 0.356" sizer die. They should both work pretty well as they are in the same range as a .357 Mag. 125 gr HPs tend to expand too aggressively to get the penetration desired.

Haven't really felt the need to fiddle as that 41 year old M57 (pinned bbl and recessed jugs) has just worked soooo well it just doesn't need to be replaced!

Congratulations on that doe mstarling…I had 5 does and a spike come in at 45 yards tonight but couldn’t get a shot from where I was with the bow. The wind is heavy today and before they got in the clear they caught my scent. Frowner

Whitworth,
I messed up when I ordered those 44 mags I had ordered them ground and got them two days before the end of firearm season. They (320 Grain hard casts) look great with very heavy crimps. Being that the firearm season is over Ill save them for another time cause I just ordered eight pounds of H110,…you know where I’m going with this huh?
Lol

That's too bad, Vinny, but aren't you planning on coming down for the AR hog hunt? That would be the perfect opprotunity to try out those 320s! How do they shoot for you?

Do you guys have an actual date? I’m all ears.

Congradulations Mike !
I recently shot a friends crossbow with a 4x scope and was totally shocked as to how accurate, fast & quiet it was. I never really had much interest in bow's, but that crossbow sparked something in me? I think?
Take Care !

I haven’t shot any as of yet. Being that I received them too late for this season I was thinking of saving these loads for a revolver that can eat them all day. I want to buy a new heavier frame 44 magnum handgun in 2009.

Nice work, Mr Mike-

I'd bet money on your Grand Slam / Whitetail Circuit [bow, rifle, handgun, ML] prospects for this season.

It must be a nice feeling with the 41 Mag rewards you with a DRT response.

Great! Of course, to make this as high class as the African Hunting forum, I will need a gun bearer. Do I have to bring my own?
