Waterrat, I don't have to wake up. I'm a taxidermist and I do this for a living. You ARE correct on the bison or a muskox or some of the long haired animals, but the statement you made is enigmatic of the attitude of too many yahoos out there. I've heard those exact same word on the outdoor TV shows with September whitetails. We CAN repair most of the trash some guys bring in, but seldom does he expect to be charged for the time and effort. I was coming out of the bush in Bettles,AK and found a caribou hunter sawing his antlers in 18 inch lengths. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was cutting them so he could pack them in his airline luggage. I told him that the taxidermist could never put them back together where it wouldn't be seen. And you already know what he told me..."Any GOOD taxidermist can fix that." So I'm sorry if I'm touchy when I hear that remark, but if you'd seen a cub black bear shot behind the eye with a .375 H&H or a deer shot through the muzzle with a shotgun slug, or one with its throat slit right through the neck patch with a dull Bowie knife, you'd probably be touchy too.

ok just ordered some 420 grain punch bullets. anyone have suggestions of how many grains of little gun powder to use?

I would suggest you contact Kelye of Belt Mountain, who makes the Punch Bullets and ask him for a suggestion.

Kelye will at least point you in the right direction since he is the manufacturer.

Actually, Kellye no longer owns Punch bullets -- he sold to Mike Rintoul of Grizzly Cartridge and Cast Performance Bullets fame. It wouldn't hurt to call Kellye or Mike for that matter.

I got a one shot kill several years back in Wyoming at about 40 yards with a Smith 6.5" Performance Center 500...500XTPs at 1325(I think)...Quartering towards me,in the shoulder and stopped in opposite rear quarter..perfect performance and expansion....

(Also a Fla. Water Buff,same thing!)
As far as 700s,I agree,just a Novelty bullet..to much chance of it jumping crimp and locking up the cylinder,just when "The Great White Buffalo" decides to eat you!

nice bison and congrats on the one shoot one kill. 420 grain punch bullet with 33 grains lil gun and some wet newspaper. ill let you know how it goes next week. My brother will try a 405 grain punch bullet in his .45-70 for a comparison.

Mozambique swamps in 2005: S&W 500 8.75" bbl. shooting Grizzly Cartridge Co. 440gr. WFNGC cast performance into the heart/lung = one dead Cape Buff. Very rare to have a DRT Cape Buff, even with a rifle, IMO. Of all the Buff I've killed, mostly with a .416Rem, only about 20% drop to the shot.

Not in the least. This should be discussed well in advance to confirm the PH is informed. Not all african countries allow you to import handguns and some specify that only "hunting handguns" may be imported. That usually means something with a bbl greater than 4" and a scope always helps the customs guys make the right decision.

My Bison was taken with a 450 M (Rifle) and a neck shot.

Do you think it would be worth it to tan the back side of the hide for a throw rug? I know the back half is not as hairy as the shoulders.
