I don't have a chronograph, so I'm not sure what kind of velocity I'm getting from my Super 14.

Am I losing enough velocity that I might have on only marginal round for feral hogs at 40-50 yards?

I also have a scoped .44 mag barrel. Would I be better off with that?

I've never hunted with a handgun before.

I can`t give you any velocity figures because I don`t know your loads , but you do not loose much compared to a 20" carbine barrel and at 40-50 yards a 30-30 should be more than enough !

Depending on bullet and powder you should be getting from 1700-2300fps, which is more than enough for close in pigs.

30/30 Remington Corlokts at 170 grains worked fine on an Alaskan Moose--they should work for a pig

Africa2003,

The best choice will be your .44 Magnum more TKO value than your 30/30. With your .44 mag a 300 gr bullet over 1100 fps (7 1/2" barrel).

With slow burning powder for a 30/30 a 14" barrel is the minimum lenght to have a good ingnition of powder.
