Anybody have any experience with this combo? I have a 5" 460 that just might be worth experimenting with these....

Too light for anything bigger than deer-sized game IMHO.

I shot a few of them in the S&W 460's I had. Shot very good, and I would say they will work and a lot more than just deer. Barnes make a great bullet, and they are known for making big holes and do a lot of damage with the razor sharp edges.

I feel the S&W 460 Mag really shines with the 300 and 325 gr. Hard cast bullets.

I would agree on the hard cast, but the people's republic, in their all-wise attempt to prevent death to the california buzzard due to lead ingestion, has outlawed lead based projectiles for hunting in a big portion of the state. So here I am, looking for effective alternatives. Previously, 300 gr 44 mag hard cast have been good piggy medicine.

Then buy all means stick with the Barnes 275 gr. bullets. That is the biggest they make as of now. I wish they would come up with a 300 or 325 gr in the .452.

Barnes has send me some 400 gr. bullets to try in my 500 Mag, not available to the public yet, they want me to try them out and give them feed back.

Whitworth, those are the bullets Barnes sent me to try out in my 500 Mag.

Also look here, they are showing you can order them directly from Barnes.

Yep, Barnes sent me 2 boxes of the 400 gr. for the 500 Mag to test for them.

that barnes x penetrates much better than you'd think and driven hard out of the 460 at top velocities it's well plenty enough for anything you're gonna shoot in the north american continent.

That was my thought, the copper tops seem to do really well, even in the lighter weights. We shall see, I may have to be the guinea pig on these. Prior to the laws of stupidity, I was using the 300 gr JFP's and was pretty happy.

He has a 5-inch .460 and I'll bet that an inch of that is muzzle brake. He's not going to get top velocities out of it. Too light a bullet for my taste. Anyone producing a heavy (or heavier) monometal expaning bullet in .45 caliber?

yeah, i don't see the point of the 5" barreled 460. i wouldn't get one unless it was at least the 8 3/8" barrel but preferably one that is 10" or more. less than that if you gotta have gun that big i'd get the .500. haven't yet figured it out but i think with hardcasts the nose profile is just as if not more impotant than weight and caliber, but the barnes all copper projectiles well perform much much different than one would expect. had some .375 HH barnes bullets and they just plain killed and penetrated like you'd expect out of a .416. even the barnes in the 44 mag or 45 colt were just more than impressive despite very very unimpressive ballistics. my bud shot an old large bull elk at just over 300 yards with a .308 and got complete penetration quartering away and just an awesome wound channel. guide was more than impressed. i think they are about the perfect answer to the .460 smith. they really penetrate much much better than one would think. so far i've gotten much much better kills with them and penetration with them loaded down to sane levels than i have with other hollowpoints that i've had to push out there a bit. much bigger wound channels than that with hardcasts as well. some don't like the price some don't like meat damage. that's fine, if i'm hunting i'll spend the bucks. one FA is for messing around with hardcasts and other rounds. one is for hunting and is stoked with the barnes federal loads. i like the dropping of the animal NOW, especially elk in vertical terrain.

I like the 5" because the ranges at which the handgun would be used would be 50 yds or less. Packability and weight tend to be more of a concern than maximum velocity. Often times, I am carrying a backpack which makes shoulder rigs really uncomfortable.

A 10" bbl sounds good on paper, but in practice, holding one on target is really tough.

But to each their own.
