Scoping a Ruger 454 Casull

I own a Ruger 454 that I love. Recently I mounted a Leupold M8 4x scope using the factory Ruger rings. I'm having some trouble with the scope sliding and I would hate to ruin it not to mention that it will never be true. Anyone have any ideas or successes with preventing this using the factory rings?

I'm not a big fan loctite. Too much potential to ruin things taking them apart again.

It may sound funny, but try some clear fingernail polish. I put a little on each screw and cranked them down as hard as I could. It worked on mine, scoped never moved after that, no mater what I shot. Hope it helps!!

What about sliding in the rings? My screws don't seem to be coming lose. I'll keep the nail polish idea in mind though, thanks.

I like to have the elevation/windage turrets up flush against the ring, so there is no place for the scope to move. It is important that the screws be tightened in sequence, don't crank one down all the way. If the screws are tightened down evenly and firmly, the scope won't move. You may also want to lap the rings for maximum contact. I lapped the rings on a buddies SRH 454, but they honestly didn't need it as contact was around 80% when I started.

Loctite is easy to safely remove, just aply a bit of heat to soften it.

I have the same gun and use a 4X Leupold. I also have a 375 JDJ Contender with a 2.5x8 Leupold. The trick I have found is to apply a thin layer of rubber cement to the inside surface of the rings. Let it dry, then mount your scope as usual. This fixes any slipping problem. I don't use anything on the screws, because I have never had those loosen.

Clear Finger nail polish has held on my 416 rem mag scope mounts 1600 shots .It has held on my Ruger 454 about 600 shots.

One half drop of 3M ScotchKote on the bottom half of each ring will stop slippage once and for all. Works better than anything I have tried over the last 35 years including lapping. Available at most major home improvement stores or electrical supply outlets for about $13 a pint. Don't leave the lid off and it will last forever. Clean up is with acetone so be carful around gun stock finishes.

To remove the scope you just remove the top half of the ring, and the scope from the rifle/pistol. Grab the scope tube in your hand and rest your thumbs on the screw ledge where the upper and lower rings meet on the half of the scope ring held by the ScotchKote. Push with your thumbs and the ring pops right off.

dgr416-I like the fingernail polish.I use the shiny floresent stuff on the front sightes of my 45-70 Guide Gun and also on my 454 front and rear.It really shows up in low light conditions.

Never thought of it as a lock tight, but I'm sure it works.
Love the new idea's.....Jayco.
