Hello all, I have the opportunity to buy a 38/44 Outdoorsman (Transitional Model) and a Pre 24 44 special. Having not owned either, I am looking for opinions on the revolvers themselves. What loads, How they shot, ect? I don't own safe queens but won't shoot them weekly either. Is buying classic pistols a bad investment if you are going to shoot them? Thanks for the help and information. It is always appreciated. ddj The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back - Robert Ruark

I won't even try to counsel on investments, but if these are revolvers you want and it is a deal you are happy with; get them. I have a pre 24 and it is an extremely accurate revolver. You will not be able to tip the powder can hard, but these days I just go up in caliber rather than pressure if more performance is desired. My 1899 vintage .32-20 shoots very well. I just have to have the front sight repaired where some fool filed about half of it off. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. Thank You Sir, I'm not to worried about the investment unless I am foolish to ever shoot them. Both guns are 98% but have been shot and have a very faint cylinder line. I have never shot either types of these Smiths or an older N frame but love the mystique of them. I don't think newer Smith's are even in the same league. Just my opinion. Would appreciate other opinions. Thanks as always, ddj The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back - Robert Ruark

I shoot my old S&Ws, I don't load them heavy, middle of the road loads and roll on. A little tlc and they should serve you well for a long time. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

With careful use, careful loading, and careful cleaning they should be a real pleasure to you and last many years while retaining their value.

I would certainly shoot them. Middle of the road loads and they will give you great pleasure I have a 32WCF like the one MS Hitman has and I enjoy shooting mine _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Thanks for the imput guys. I hope to use these Smith's for many years. I am sure there are others here with much more experience but these old N frames are beautiful revolvers in my eyes. ddj The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back - Robert Ruark
