i have a Lipseys Ruger Vaquero 4-5/8" that will not shoot my 250 Gr. LNT WFN worth a damn. When I run some of my buddies 312 gr. LBT WFN in the thing with 12 gr. 296 it will tag a pop can at 150 yards. Trying to decide between a 300 or 280 gr. Mold.
I plan on running it at about 1,000 FPS and use it for casual shooting at long range rocks and an occasional Black Bear. Any ideas out there.?

If you can hit a pop can at 150 yards with a 312 LBT WFN, then that is the bullet I would use.

You know it shoots good, I would go with it.

+1

You may want to check the diameter of the 250s and the 312s. I have seen Rugers that would not accurately shoot a bullet smaller than 0.432".

I'm no help, I can't even see a pop can at 150 yds! You might want to take that gun & load on TV.

FWIW, I just slugged the throats in my Lipsey .44Spl and they're .4315".

With the 44 specials built in the smaller (medium) frame, is the load of a 300gr @ 1000fps in a 4-5/8" barrel pretty hot? I may be off on this but just wondering where the limits are with the new 44 specials in the mid frame since I have two of the bisley models and would like know.

Ya, I'm wondering about the strenght of this little revolvers myself.
As far as the comment about taking the act on TV, thats rediculious. I have 3 other friends that can do the same thing. We shoot about 30,000 rnds a year with handguns. Have for years. We shoot them out to about 300 yards. Not a big deal. I'm sure most of you here that shoot much can do the same.
I'm sizing my bullets at .430 and they fit the cylinder throats snugly.
I appreciate all comments.

Ok Whitworth, point taken.
We get so many customers in our shop that think hanguns are only accurate to about 25 yards. When I mention what they WILL do they look at me like I'm crazy.

How many votes for a gas check bullet? I know they can sure help accuracy, but really dislike the added expense and trouble putting thm on.

The best way to learn to shoot your revolver is to try silhouette matches.

My big game handgun hunting has been with a 44mag .I still don't understand why it is necessary to have 280,300 330 gr bullets especially in a 44 special. My first bullet was the old Speer 225 half jacket 225SWHP .Only recovery almost 30" of deer.

Correct, I shot silhouette for many years.
I'm not wanting to use a heavy bullet for added penetration, but for better accuracy at longer rangers. The 250 in mine shot loosey.
The 300s shoot like a rifle. That's why I want a heavier bullet.
Have you ever shot a 300 in your .44 mag?
Iv'e shot thousands of 320s. Shot great.
The most accurate bullet I've ever shot in a ahandgun was a 340 gr. LBT WLN out of my old Freedom Arms .454. Tin cans at 200 metters were childs play. The 250s. . . . not so much!

I have a 35 year old M29 in excellent shape and want to keep it that way.So I'll not use heavier than about 270.I get my deer though hunting here is under 75 yds usually.

Hey Whitworth,

What LBT would you use if you wanted to pop a rock at looong range? The WFN or the WLN?
Thanks

people that do not get to shoot a lot sometimes misunderstand just how accurately one can be shot at "range". Especially if one shoots a WHOLE lot.

I used to have a place to shoot (with a very long impact area) and the closest I could shoot was about 150.

I cheated and leaned back against a post and put my arms on my knees, but one can get very accurate fire when they practice.
