Picked up a S&W 460, 10.5" barrel, this one has what I'm assuming are Weaver style mounts milled into the barrel. Any opinions on the 2x7 Burris, and what style/brand of rings?

Myself I like Leupold or Bushnell scopes. The Burris will work, but they are not my favorite.
On my S&W 460 Mag, I have a Leupold 2.5X8 and it works great. As for rings, I use Warne.

What is the deal with the Warne ring that come in a package of three, do two go on the front and one in the rear? I am a Leupold fan myself, however I was looking at the Burris for the Ballistic Plex, I thought this may help with extended range.

If you like the Burris you should use it. As for the 3 ring pack of rings, I have no idea. I think if you mount a scope correctly, no more than 2 rings are needed. I think 3 rings are for show or a gimmick to sell more rings. JMHO.

Leupold rings are fine also, but I never had luck with the QD style, so I stick with the permanent ones, same with the Warne rings.

Sorry, the ring I'm speaking of are made by Weigand, they state the 3 ring sets are designed for 454 and up. $69.99 from Midway USA.

Never even seen them, but then again I never looked for them. 2 rings is all I have ever used on my big bore handguns.

I have 2 rings on 2 of the 500 Mags, a 510 GNR, my S&W 460 Mag, my BFR in 45-70, my Encore in 475 Linebaugh, a Ruger 480 and a 375 H&H Encore pistol barrel. All have worked just fine.

But if you like the look of 3 rings, by all means get them.

On pistol scopes with longer tubes I prefer 3 and even 4 rings, they add stability and lessen the amount of torque on the tube and I KNOW the scope won't move. They also lessen the likelyhood of one of them shearing off the mounting screw at a critical time. When the S&W 500 first came out I ordered a pair of Weigand rings and two just wouldn't hold no matter what I tried.

The top gun should be what you just bought and it's wearing a Burris 3x-12x with Balistic plex and Burris rings. The bottom gun has the 3 Weigand magnum rings. 3 or 4 rings do cost more but they give me piece of mind and there's no sense in skimping on 1k guns.

I've got several Burris 2-7 scopes; my favorite pistol scope. I plan to scope my 8 3/8" 500 Mag with a 2-7 Burris.

DEC, that's an awesome collection of S&W's! thumb

Thanks x-caliber. The only one not showing is my little 2 3/4" ES snubby. It's a handful, to say the least.

CLK320, they're high rings.

I might be late into this thread but I have had problems with Burris scopes on big bore handguns. The reticle broke on the second round from a Ruger .480 Super Redhawk. They fixed it. Later on the Posi-Lock broke. They fixed it again. Guess that's all OK if you don't mind the back and forth and waiting time, but I don't. I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 on my S&W500 and have had no problems. I like the Warne mount and QD rings for the X-Frames, and so does S&W.

.. I,ve got and use a bunch or Burris scopes on rifles and I use them . But I have had to send things back and forth . I don,t enjoy that too much ... I don,t know why they can,t etch their reticules in ...... ...... Barska does .... One less thing to break .... .. I really like Burris scopes but I probably won,t get another until they make them so they don,t break .......
