Hey Everyone

I been loading IMR 4227 in my 44 mag loads for the last year maybe more, Have have very good accuracy and been extremly happy with the performace for my 240 loads,
a moderate magnum
22 Gr. under a 240 Rainers FP and a cci lg p Primer

I have always found some powder granuals in the barrel, My thinking it is some unburned powder,

Well I am down to my last of my primers and was wondering if anybody has loaded magnum primers with this powder and if so have they found a benifit.

Thanks Matt

You are indeed experiencing unburned powder granules. Take care that one of those doesn't get up under your extractor in shooting a double action revolver.

My Speer manual does not indicate the use of a magnum primer for this powder. The Hornady manual lists the Winchester WLP, which is a magnum primer. If you do change primers, start at the lower powder charges and work your way back up to a load that is accurate in your firearm without exceeding published data.

I have shot several pounds of IMR 4227 in my Model 57 Smiths. I, too, experienced unburned or partially burned powder with standard primers, but never worried about it. The velocities I experienced and the softer felt recoil made the unburned powder kernels a minor annoyance. Accuracy was superb as well, often with entire cylinders of Lyman 410459 cast stacking into one ragged hole. I used 21 grains behind the Lyman cast projectile...

If memory serves, they were CCI 500s (I think that is what CCI calls their large pistol primers...) It has been a long time ago, and for what it is worth, I am one of those that never really saw that much difference betweeen standard handgun primers, so long as you didn't switch between magnum and standard.

Rifle primers were a different story, at least for me...

Accuracy can be extreme with 4227 and my best 200 meter group was shot with it.
It failed at IHMSA as soon as the gun warmed and the hotter the gun got, the faster it shot and the flatter primers got along with sticky extraction.
The bullets will hit lower and lower as they speed up. I would center the first 200 meter ram and by the time I got to the fifth, I was 16 clicks over normal and hit 50 meters short in the dirt.
That powder does not go in my .44.
It works fine in other calibers. The .357 max loved it.
Yes I tried both IMR and Hodgdon.
I use nothing but 296 and standard primers in the .44. I like Fed 150's.
You will get a million hits saying H110 and 296 need mag primers and it is not true.
Mag primers are not needed with 4227 and they will not help you either. Tried that!
My suggestion is to dump the powder but my opinion is held in low quality here.
Get your .44 to do this at 200 yards.
Or two shots on the leg of a 200 meter chicken with the .44.

Your blanket statements are held in low esteem here.

Never say never, because someone somewhere will find some facts to prove you wrong.

How can you say "blanket" statement after I spent years fooling with the powder? Not a single person shooting IHMSA using a .44 with 4227 ever had a score.
Maybe you should test and show results with a hot gun. I told everyone a cold gun shoots the powder fine but heat affects it. Experience beats esteem all year. I never, ever remember any proof or groups shown by you. Do you REALLY shoot any guns?
Others dispute you and you close the threads.
I do not hate you but you should be more open minded and actually see things for yourself before being so detrimental. You are just too personal!
If you came to shoot with me and have some BBQ we would be friends, just why are you so harsh? I have tried and tried but can not get past your thick skin.

I also stated the powder works great in many calibers. Only the .44 has given the most problems and since I have no experience with it in the .475, I will not dispute you.
I will never argue over anything I do not know.
Try not to stray from the original question.

Some days just be that way.

bfrshooter, is that the best rant you can come up with? I was sure you could do much better than that.
