I have a ruger redhawk .44 that i carry as a backup weapon. What is the best FACTORY round that can be bought for the redhawk. I guide in big five areas so am looking for something that can take any of them on in an emergency.

Good luck with the elephant! Unfortunately I cannot help you as I only shoot reloads. If you can find factory rounds with a 300 grain bullet that would probably work best. At least it does in my gun.

For absolutely uncompromised penetration, I would get Grizzly Cartridge's 300 grain Punch bullet loads. These brass bullets have a lead core and even when they make contact with bone or other hard obstacles, they maintain their nose profile and integrity and continue in a straight line. They are a bit spendy, but I figure my life is worth it. Here is a link to their .44 mag ammo page and the last two loads are loaded with Punch bullets.

For backup against the Big Five, wouldn't you want something bigger than the 44mag?
Like maybe the 475 or 500 Linebaugh? A Ruger SRH in 480 might be a good choice also.
Is there any ammo company that loads the punch bullets for the 500 JRH?

Grizzly Cartridge or Buffalo Bore, both make excellent ammo for the 44 maggie.

Also take a look at Garretts 44 Mag ammo.

I know they will shoot not only through a cape buff skull but into the brain on a cow elephant, side brain shot.

His cast bullets seem harder and deform less than others I have tested.

that 44 mag with the punch bullets from grizzly is gonna work great with greater follow up speed than any of the bigger bores.

I am not familiar with Grizzly so cannot comment.
I would take a look at Garrett's web site. His bullets have done very well against the big guys.

I agree... As much as I like hard cast bullets, fact is that on the largest on game with HEAVY bone the Punch bullet will penetrate the best and hold it's form no matter how tough the going gets and that is why I also recommend the Grizzly Cartidge load with the 300 Grain "Punch" bullet

i have recently heard of a SW 500 user that had a hard cast fail miserably on an elephant, from a pretty reputable PH in Sout Africa. it almost got the PH and the hunter killed. PH is a great guy and didn't proceed to condemn handgun usage, just bullet choice. using a punch bullet or corbon penetrator just cuts through all the BS and doesn't fail.

oh yeah, that incident involved poor bullet placement as well.

remember, don't try and shoot through an elephants femur, shoot behind it.
