HI, I have had a 500L for years now,Dave Clements did the work and I really like it alot. Here is the problem my eyes are really gone bad now and I am thinking of putting a fast dot on it as it is small enough for my holster and I will have a easier time of getting it on target.Do any of you here used one and what do you thing? As long as I can get out to 100 yards tops, I am okay,Kev

kev5000, the first weapon I have put a red dot on is my .475 Linebaugh, and I have to say that I absolutely love it. I cannot think of a better sighting system in low-light conditions. I don't know how good the Burris units are but a number of us here have Ultradots on our heavy recoilers and they stand up to a real beating and never seem to fail. Oh, and welcome to the forum! kev5000, I put a Burris fast fire on my Ruger 480 and then on my S&W 500 Mag. I really did not care for it and replaced them with Ultra-dot sights. The Burris fast fire just did not look appealing to me, so I put it on my Turkey shotgun. Love my Ultra-dot though. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. Welcome to the forum. I am not familiar with the Burris red Dot sight, but have several of them (from other manufacturers) including Ultra Dot. While fast, they do not deliver the accuracy that I desire at 100 yards. The problem is that the dot subtends a significant angle at distance, especially if you have to "crank up" the intensity in broad daylight. While some now have different size "dots", I believe that the problem still exists. I have not been able to achieve better than 5" groups at 100 yards from my 223 RIFLES, which have proven accuracy with a scope. If you really want to achieve hunting accuracy at 100 yards, then I would recommend a scope, which does adorn my Ruger SBH in 44 mag. At shorter distances (25 - 50 yards), the red dots work just fine. Just my 2 cents! Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. You'll never get the groups at those ranges as you will with a scope, but I don't have any trouble at 100 + yards shooting accurately with my Ultradot. But, it's a hunting handgun and the accuracy is minute-of-dead-animal. Also, they work great in low-light.......JMHO. I also think that they hold up better than scopes do on handguns with really abusive recoil. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." A scope on a hunting handgun is crazy hard to hit with off hand. You need a rest all the time unless the animal is close. I have never seen a long eye relief scope that transfered enough light to see through until the sun is full up. That means you will lose 1/2 hour of legal shooting time AM and PM. I have shot too many 1" groups at 100 yd's with the Ultra Dots on my BFR's to say they are not accurate. It is all in what you aim at and how you aim. Paper targets are tough but set the bottom of the dot on top of a tin can and it's dead.

HI, I am looking for the smallest dot as possible,I look at the ultra-dot and saw a compact model is this the one you use. I would get this type and not the tube as the tube is to big for what I want,I could carry the compact without having to change the holster. kev

I use the Match-dot and 1 inch tube Ultra-dots. But the compact model is very nice. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member

I just resigned myself to the fact that I needed a new holster. That said, the Ultradot 30 (I'm sure the 1-inch version weighs even less) only weighs a bit more than 4-ozs........don't know if that helps. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." HI, GSSP,thanks for that information I really like the way that red dot ACOG looks. It goes over the rear sight so the rear sight is no way blocking the dot,Also it looks very tough like all ACOGS,Cabelas sell them around 313.00 and base it around 45.00 Kev

An Ultradot 30 can be had for $139.00 shipped........ And if it'll put up with the recoil of my DA .475, I suspect it'll hold up to virtually any handgun round....... FA website seems to be promoting JP enterprise red dot. They're small, affordable and quality enuff to hunt with. Seems to handle the recoil of the really big guns ~ doctors and tru glo are similar possibly better quality but expensive. I question an open reflet type (like the fast fire also) in inclimate wx w/precipitation distorting the view. The UD's are a closed tube type and an extremely good value but those I mentioned are light and small/handy ~ just can't vouch for their ruggedness. ==================================================================================================== Note: This post may contain misspellings, grammatical errors, disorganized sentence structure, or may entirely lack a coherent theme. These elements are natural to the process of writing, and will only add to the overall beauty of the post ~ Smartfix

They are smaller than the Ultradots, but the UD 30 -- like the one I have on my .475 weighs a hair over 4-oz, so they are very light which also contributes to their ability to take recoil. Was talking w/Larry of Larrysguns.com who sells UDs and to my knowlege the only warranty/repair center for the US. It was suggested that its applicfation was for shooting under a cover (range/indoor) amd was the basis for my earlier reservation for hunting/outdoor application for my own JP. He no longer sells the compact. FWIW

On edit: also, to my knowlege, none of the small open reflex red dots have sealed battery case/trays like the tube/scope style with their rubber O ring ~ which are larger and more cumbersome but wx sealed. Ones pays his money and ~ ~ ~ ~ Aging vision isn't a slam dunk to deal with.

I have tried many red dots over the years. Tasco's, Millet's, Bushnell's, etc. Just the .44 would pull the front lens out of them. I had to take a bunch apart and steel bed the glass back in. The cheap glue they put the glass in with is junk. The metal is not rolled over the lens. I called Bushnell about the reflex sight and was told it would break. The reason I use the Ultra Dot is because I called Magnum Research and asked which one will hold up. There are other good ones but I don't want to pay the price and then find out they might break. Some prices are so high I could buy more guns. The very best thing to do is to call and find out if the thing will stand the heavy recoil of some of our handguns. They are MUCH worse then a rifle or shotgun. I have also shredded scopes before even getting sight settings. Strange that a cheap Tasco 2X is strong enough for the .475 yet a more expensive Swift just blew to pieces. Be very careful when choosing one for a big bore. When I add it up, I have broken more things on a gun then the gun cost. There is nothing worse then having to send something back just before the season opens.

I have use a bunch of red-dot sight's myself. Here is a list of the ones I used and how they performed. Tasco PD 3, used on a Redhawk 44 Mag for over 6 years and still holding up. My buddy has the gun and scope now. Leupold/ Gilmore, blew out the red-dot on my Super Redhawk 454 Casull. Millet, blew out the red-dot on my Super Redhawk 44 Mag, replaced and I now have it on my Ruger Super Redhawk 480, and it is still holding up. Aim-Point, blew out the red-dot on my Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull. Replaced and sold the new red-dot. Bushnell Holo sight, worked great on my Encore 460 Mag, sold the barrel and red-dot. 1 inch Ultra-dot, I bought this over 5 years ago, it has been on my BFR in 500 Mag for as long. I have well over 3000 rounds on this red-dot and it is holding up great. Ultra-dot Match-dot, I own 2 of them, one on my 410 GNR Encore Barrel and one on my 475 Linebaugh Encore barrel. I have had the Match-dots on several other handgun, from 460 Mag to my 500 mag. They are holding up great. EOTech Model 512.A65, it is on my 510 GNR Encore barrel. I have over 500 rounds fired on the sight and it is hold up very well. The red-dot I recommend for heavy recoiling handguns is the Ultra-dot's and EOTech's. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member
