Speer Gold Dot 270 grain soft point - .429 Shot out of a Ruger SBH 44 rem. magnum at a 350 pound wild boar. Hit him in the lungs and clipped the lower portion of the spine. The bullet was found against the skin on the far side of the hog. The load was a factory Buffalo Bore Cartridge. 240 grain Black Talon shot out of a Ruger SBH Hunter 44 rem magnum at a 150-170 pound whitetail deer. The bullet went through both shoulders and was found "gripping" the hide on the far shoulder. This was from a factory Winchester Black Talon cartridge. David

Can you still buy the Black Talons? Jeff

You can find them at gun shows. They are not worth the current asking price of most sellers, though. I have seen them as high as $60 for a box of 20. The box that bullet came from only cost $16 from Wal-Mart. You can thank Winchester for buckleing to the anti-gun crowd for the disappearance of the Black Talon. The Black Talon's are still made in defense type calibers and renamed - Rangers. To my knowledge the 44 Black Talon is no longer made under any name. David

Quote: So, are they Black Talons in sheeps clothing? May have to look at those! I do remeber Brian Pearce writing an article about them and he seemed to be impressed. Thanks for the heads-up, RMiller.

Yes they are. Winchester had a picture of an expanded bullet on there website a couple months ago. It isn't there anymore so my link to it did not work.

I have seen a picture of one in a magazine article and plan to buy a couple boxes to try out this year. Thank you for bringing them to my atention! I skipped right over the article a few months ago without noticing the "claws" on the new bullet. David

David, I'm impressed by the bullet's performance. And since you have recovered bullets, I'm assuming that you harvested what you shot at! My question is what ranges were these animals taken at? Thanks, X

X, Yes both animals were recovered. The hog was shot at approximately 25 yards (maybe a little less) behind a pack of dogs. The deer shot with the BT was shot at around 40-50 yards. David
