I'm new to the forum, but have been reading here a while and have recieved some great info. I would like to get some loads for a Ruger Old Model Vaquero in .45LC for 250gr jacketed bullets and some for cast bullets of the same weight.

Welcome aboard. I tend to shy away from the posting of loads on the forum, unless it can be referenced to a loading manual. Lyman's reloading catalog for revolvers has a good number of cast bullet loads. Hornady and Speer also provide excellent loading data for their bullets. If you are new to reloading, I highly encourage you to read the front of the book, which explains the steps for reloading metallic cartridges. Thanks for the welcome Hitman. I've been reloading for rifles and a sbh .44 for about ten years. I really just want to know what powders you guys recommend for the 45lc. I have h110 that I use in my 44.

H-110 is excellent for top end 45 Colt loads _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

I use Accurate 4100, which is the same powder as Ramshot Enforcer. Slower than AA#9 and 2400, slightly faster than H110/W296. Doesn't need magnum primers and shoots extremely clean.

Charlie, You can use any "ruger" only loads listed on Hodgdon's data page. The "Original" Vaquero is the same strength as the large frame counterparts, Bisley, Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk. The "New" Vaquero is the smaller frame version and requires a lower threshold for pressure.

I use 296 for top end loads and 2400 and HS-6 for mid range loads. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

I've had good luck with an Old Vaquero Bisley 45LC using 300g cast with a healty dose of 296. That grip can reduce the felt recoil. I have another Old Vaquero in the standard grip frame in 45LC also and those loads in this shooter bang the knuckle of my second finger big time.

I had some hangfires with 296, granted it was cold, -20 or so at the time. I like IMR 4227 and a 300 grn cast. Oddly, less muzzleflash then Unique with my 4 5/8" Ruger.

Many afficienados of the 45 Colt (myself included) favor top end loads using 300 grain cast bullets. Jacketed bullets tend to be expensive and not as accurate. So, by all means develop top end loads, but also develop midrange loads that will allow you to shoot more! I tend to only use loads that have proven accuracy and do have some mid range loads which I will research and post. Peter. Added: I use 255 gr. cast bullets. 9.0 grs. Universal Clays 969 fps. 8.0 WW 231 932 fps. 11.0 grs. Unique 1071 fps My Ruger is very accurate with a variety of loads! Be without fear in the face of your enemies.
