I have been looking to get a mold for my 480 that was lighter weight than the 395gr LBT LFN that I've been using. I wanted something around 325-340gr. This was for general plinking and deer hunting. I had gotten some 310's from Paul H and they were fun and easy to shoot pushed to 1000fps by HS6 and another load with Universal Clays. We had talked about cutting down a Lee 400gr mold to the second band. Well, I picked up a Lee, and used a fly cutter in the mill to take it down. This should work. I haven't cast any yet with this mold, but filing down a 400gr Lee bullet gave a weight of 340gr. We'll see how they cast. If anyone wnats to try this, be sure to take the first .050" slowly so you can find the top of the blind handle mounting pin, which can be driven out then from the top. Do not try to cut the pins by leaving them in the mold. They are really hard! You will ruin the mold, and possibly the fly cutter inserts. The only thing I needed to do after cutting the mold down, was grind the pins shorter, shorten the sprue plate screw and take a little off the bent piece on the sprue plate as it touched the handle fork. If anyone wants to have a lighter weight mold for cheap, this is it. Of course, you do need access to a mill or a machine shop that will do it cheaply. It looks like I'll need to use lower crimp groove for a lube groove, and hopefully there will be enough lube in those shallow grooves. Mark Stevenson

Sounds cool. You'll have to let us know how it worked out. If that doesn't work out, then you can always get exactly what you want at www.mountainmolds.com I've tried the Lee 400gn in my 470NE, but I don't have a .475 handgun yet

475/480, thanks for the offer. I might take you up on that. In the form of a trade. I'll get some of these cast up, and see how they shoot. If they shoot well, I'd be wiling to trade for some of those 305's.

LAR45, I will have Dan make me some molds, I just wanted to try this and for $18 the mold was cheap. Go buy yourself a Ruger SRH in 480. I don't believe the difference between the 480 and the 475 Linebaugh is that great, and the Ruger, although way behind the Freedom Arms in fit and finish, for a poor man, it's more than good enough. My 480 SRH is the most accurate out of the box handgun I've ever owned.

I like the SRH. I had one in 44mag, but I couldn't get it to shoot very well. I sold it, got a 44mag Bisley and my group sizes shrank about 1/2 of what they were. I have a Ruger SRM 357max that I've been thinking that I should have built into something huge like a 475 Long when I graduate next year.

370 LBT that I have used have been accurate, but my 480 like the 400 grain weight better. Don't know why. That includes some Semi wadcutter I got From Lloyd (great bullets), WFN,LFN, or even with the jacketed stuff.
Have Fun
