I have only experienced two Buffalo Bore loads, the 325 grain .45 Colt and the .44 Spl 255 grain. Both seem to me to be more than adequate for medium game. I've killed a 750 pound water buffalo cow with a 240 grain .44 Special cast SWC load at 1000 fps, breaking the off shoulder and lodging under the skin. My other medium game kill was a 250 pound hog, killed with a 255 grain cast SWC .45 Colt load at 1040 fps. Two rounds had complete penetration on both shoulders of the hog. I don't know what more you can expect. Cast bullets through the lungs don't stop as quickly as hollowpoints, but they break all the bones you hit along the way and make two holes, except for the one very large animal, to my whitetail deer adjusted eyes, and that round still broke a shoulder and destroyed a lot of skin, ribs, and heart-lung tissue on the way to its "failure" to exit. Both my loads were inferior to the Buffalo Bore loads in weight and velocity. If Buffalo Bore makes it, it works as advertised with the velocity indicated, within so small a difference as to be meaningless. My .45 Colt 5 1/2 inch Redhawk didn't get the indicated muzzle velocity, but missed the full 1325 fps velocity by only 25 fps. I haven't chronographed the .44 Special loads, but have full faith in that they will have the as advertised velocities and performance. If I didn't load my own, I'd use theirs. I think bigger bores are better, if the sectional density and velocity don't get too low. A 200 grain .40 caliber at 1000 fps works. The 410 grain .480 has a sectional density equal to a 360 grain .451, more than enough for any game animal appropriate for a handgun. Muzzle energy is meaningless in this discussion, no energy is needed for hollow point expansion. No energy dump to hope for or consider, just two holes. I do think hollowpoints are better lung tissue disrupting loads, if you can get an unobstructed behind the shoulder shot through one rib. | ||
