Over the weekend, a friend of mine decided that he would finally sell me 2 of his handguns that I have been drooling over for a number of years.
An as nib S & W 29-2. It has been fired but is in almost mint condition. And the other revolver is a NIB, Unfired except at the factory 6" Colt Python. He said he bought it in 1976 and has never fired it. It is absolutely pristine. Wheeee! shocker

That one has been fired and there is an ever so slight turn line on the cylinder, but I think it is going in my collection. I also have the 8 3/8 version in a 29-2 but have put about 20,000 rounds through it. I've been after these 2 guns for about 5 years now and finally wore the gent down enough to sell them.
thanks

Hell of a deal Rick!
Congrats on the deal.
Sounds like it pays to be a longtime nag don't it?
Ha!

They look a lot like my K'38 6". Like you said: "has 20,000 rnds thru it". Bore is nicely polished shiney from my hard cast. Don't ever need a patch thru it, just clean the smoke off the outside.

You gonna shoot 'em or lock 'em up? They do look fine on that "old hide".

George,
I know I won't shoot the Python, and the 29-2 is too clean to shoot (dangit) so probably not. I have other .44's to plink or hunt with if I need to.
Poprivet,
Yes, we all have had guns that we got rid of and regretted, usually right after the money changed hands.
I didn't nag him, he is just going through a divorce and is liquidating to come up with enough money to get his ex paid off. We all know how that feels.

I can understand the procurement of new toys but if you just lock them in the safe won't they feel like they have done something wrong?

They are made to shoot - if you want something to look at buy gold or diamonds.

Sorry - I just don't have any space for safe queens. If I won't shoot it then I don't want it.

I feel the same way but the Python is one gun I have to pass on shooting. I got it strictly as an investment. The 29-2 will get shot, trust me, just not much. I don't like shooting small calibers in a hand gun anyway. From .41 on up trips my trigger. I've got the .41, .44, .45, .460, 500, .35 Rem in an XP100 and other calibers then there's the .375JDJ Besides, Diamonds have cost me 2 houses already.
TOO MANY CHOICES

Paul:
I've got a deposit box so full of coins, gold n silver I can't pick the thing up and they won't let me take a helper in to do it.

There's also a 8mm (2.8ct) antique diamond in there worth around $30,000. I keep hoping I'll find a woman to hang it on.

Hell of it is on the metals is watching the values go up n down. One day it'll go down $20, next it's up $30, then back down. Recently gold was almost $1300 again, now it's back to $1240 or so today. Plumb disgusting. Can't sell it for that much loss. Uncle claims within ten yrs gold will hit $5000.

Dad said a few months before he died (10/10) "IF gold ever hits a grand, he'd sell it all". Well, about the yr after he died it was $1900 and we still have it.

Sure a good thing watching the values change so much don't bother me much or it'd drive a person nuts.
IF I'd cash it out, I'd just spend it anyway. Might to take a hunting trip though ,but, it sure needs to get back within reason of what was paid for it.

Of course what Dad bought among ingots and such, was: five Krugerands for a total of $370 for all five and commissions too. Sure wish he'd of bought a couple hundred of 'em for that price. That was before gold hit $800 that time yrs ago.

Wish you guys well, go shootin!
Rick: you get that new room built yet?

No George, I just got the dirt contractor over yesterday with his backhoe. He got quite a bit done but then his a couple of shale benches that shut him down. Let it air out for a couple of days and he should get it done.

+1 There is not a gun in my safe that I don't shoot. I just don't understand why people buy "stuff" and just look at it vice using it.

Normally, I would agree with you and PaulS, However, if I want to shoot a .357, I already have several to play with and to shoot the Python (Which is unfired) would detract from it's current value.
Chances are that the 29 will get plenty of rounds through it eventually but I also have more than several of them in user condition. The only other gun I have that I will not shoot is an original Sharps in, I believe, 50-70. It is a museum piece that I picked up and can't (or don't want to) find ammo.
I have always held that the firearms I purchase are shooters but give me a break. Ruin the value of the Python? I've got a whole 1200. in it and the market value is much greater unfired. dancing

I shoot all of my weapons, Pythons included, regardless of cost or future "potential" value. Safe queens are like art... value only realized at time of sale (dollars in my bank account). If that's how you make a living more power to you. If not, enoy the darn things for what they were intended for! Shoot 'em as much as possible.

BTW: Congrats on the fine acquisitions regardless of what you do with them.

Our shooting/collecting sports have a wide diversity of folks and while I would never buy a "safe queen" I know that there are those who do. If that is what you bought it for then that's fine. I am certainly in no position to tell you how to enjoy the things you buy - it is your money so use it as you wish. My preference is to shoot the guns I have but there is nothing wrong with the way anyone else does it. It is all part of the gun business and as long as you are buying guns it is fine with me. The more we buy the harder it is to take them away.

I have an Ffl and have all the guns I want(or need). It was an investment, for all purposes. I probably paid him2-3 times what he paid for it and it is worth at least twice what I gave him. Most everything else in my safe is well used. Trust me, sir.

Sheesh!!! Rick's guns; why in the world can't he do with them as he wishes?

I don't understand all this "be reasonable; do it my way" thinking. FWIW, I, too, have safe queens, and I have shooters. The safe queens I am gambling on making money for me; the others, I really don't care, as I shoot them.

Just my $.02...

Scot,
They're welcome to jump my ass. I know what I got. I've always wanted a 6" BLUED Python in NIB condition, Unfired. Didn't want to shoot it, just wanted it. Don't know why, I hate the .357. Hurts my ears. It has to be one of the sexiest revolvers ever made. I can take it out every now and then and enjoy it. If I had a favorite .357, it had to be the S&W Model 28. It's what I carried for duty as a cop after I got out of the Marine Corps. It will be taken care of and appreciated. I'm tickled pink(without the skirt).
Actually, I agree with them, with this exception. There are only this and the original Sharps that I have. It is in mint condidtion that I will not fire. They both are worth a lot more in unfired condition than fired. I have several guns that are worth a hell of a lot more than I gave for them that I don't shoot. I got an original, lettered, Remington .41 short rimfire derringer that I have shot. And a few others but the Python is an exception to my Own rule. This is the only gun I own that will not be fired by me. When My wife sells it, she'll be grateful.

I do not intend to "jump anyone's ass. I was just stating my views and acknowledging that other views are equally as valid.

I'm truly sorry if I offended anyone.

Trust me, I am not offended and did not mean my remark to be offensive. I guess I should have said "let 'em get on me over it" instead. I do recognize that my opinions are not always the same as everyone else's and I'm okay with that.
When I bought my first 29-2 in 1977. They were sort of hard to get. My Lt on the PD where I worked had 2 of them in a safety deposit box. When he found out that I had bought one, he just about went into convulsions when I told him I was going to shoot it. He tried for a couple of days to buy it so it would be pristine and unfired. but he was also at the range when I unleashed it for the first time. He wanted to shoot it. I never did understand that but each to their own. No harm, no foul!
