The 1911 in 45 ACP as a "Field" Gun

Many people that use a 1911 as a city carry gun also carry it in the field.

While I think a 4" 44 Mag S&W is a superior Field gun I have carried a 1911 in 45ACP quite a bit, including on some black bear hunts and backpacking in Grizz country.

I really like the 1911's...
At one time I thought about going to a 10mm, but just did not want to get into a new calibre.

The 45 ACP is on the ragged edge of power for protection against the bigger animals, but with the roer bullet I think it would enetrate the skull on even a big bear.

I have carried the cast H&G 68 over a stiff charge of Unique, and shot mule deer with it. I have also carried regular 230gr ball and the Hornady FP, but I think the best factory load is the 230gr FP from Buffalo Bore.

Also I have found the Speer shotshells in 45 ACP to be very effective on snakes and small game including grouse. I have used a ot of them over the years.

Most often I carried a Colt Commander [the one most people call the Lightweight Commander].
I have had this gun since 1971, I am wearing it now. This gun is very light and handy as well as pretty accurate and Speer shotshells function in it most all the time.

Sometimes I carry a fully accurized Government Model, but usually the LWC gets the call.

AS much as I like my 1911's, I still feel the 44 Mag is a better choce for a "Field Gun".

The 1911 is the classic "Great Gun." Have owned them in 9mm, 38 Super, 40 S&W and 45 ACP. Have spent enough money on raceguns over the years to have subsidized a couple of good hunts to Africa.

Have carried one as backup when pig hunting. Have taken deer with one.

While I love my 1911s there are better "field guns." A 44 Mag or 45 LC Smith Mountain gun would certainly be a fine choice. Some time ago Horton's had a small run of Smith 657s in 41 Mag built as 3" roundbutts. That's what I most often carry as a backup gun in the field. One hellova snubby Wink

I carry mine afield when baiting for bears loaded with 230gr Hornady FP/FMJ's over a stout charge of power pistol. Converting one to .460 Rowland would be the ticket but again, only if you handload.

You and I agree on most gun issues and this is no exception. My favorite CCW is a Colt Commander and I use a S&W 329 as a backup when hunting. If I wasn't in grizzly country once in a while I would be perfectly happy with a 45 ACP as a field gun. However, I just can't warm up to the Blazer rifles.

I have used my 1911 as a field gun quite a bit, even a couple of times in Grizz country.

I even trailed 2 wounded black bear, shot by other hunters. After I saw how tough a bear looked I changed back to the 44 Mag.

I still carry it deer and pig hunting sometimes.

Next time we do a DRSS event I will bring a Blaser R 93 and you can shoot it some.

You already know how to cock it, you had a Krieghoff. Big Grin

I started carrying a 1911 over twenty years ago when I worked as a deputy in Houston TX. Personally owned guns aren't popular here in the East so I've carried issued guns in the later part of my career, but when off duty a full sized 1911 is stuck in my belt more often than not. That included numerous hiking expeditions where most of the dangerous predators were two legged. I've just never found another gun that I was both mentally and physically comfortable with and I've tried some of the itsy bitsy guns.

I've killed a couple of road injured deer with Speer's 200gr +P Golddot load with perfect satisfaction. Now I may just have to try carrying it next deer season just so I can build a bit more confidence by putting some venison in the freezer. Big Grin

Mountain Gun or 1911 or Mountain Gun or 1911 , too many guns, too little time afield...
