Ruger SBH 44 Mag convert to 480 Ruger?

Is there a Ruger SA revolver in the works for the 480? If not, I was wondering what the thoughts are out there about converting a SBH to 480 from 44 Mag - of course the conversion would be a 5-shot gun.

Anyone out there know of a good smith to do this?

Thanks - Redleg

It can be done. Simialr to 475 Linebaugh conversion. Linebaugh, Clements, or Bowen are some smiths that can do this.

There was rumor about a new frame and grip before the 480 came out in the SRH. I think John Taffin saw it. Haven''t heard any more since then.

Thanks. Why is Ruger developing a new frame? Do they want a 6-shooter? That, in my opinion, would be a bit bulky.

I got to thinking about a 50 special, then brass availability crept in my head and I thought "475 special" then I remembered Hornady/Ruger have done that.

I think a 5-shot 480 Ruger on the SBH frame we already have would be a darling.

Thanks for the input - redleg

Redleg,
I agree!!
I would love to see a SBH in 480. A 5 shot with the existing frame/grip - EXCEPT with a 5" ejector rod and housing (like the ones on the HUNTER model)would be perfect. I love ruger single actions, but do not care one bit about their double action guns. Their double action guns are great guns, just not my style.

We'd all love one like that, but by the time you're done it will be $2000-2500! Makes more sense to get an FA already done for $1500-1600.

Blackhawk44,
Freedom Arms is the way to go as of now, BUT I would like to see RUGER introduce this gun into their line up. Not only would the gun sell like hot cakes. It would increase the interest in THEIR new cartridge. Also, it would further solidify their position as the Number 1 (factory) Revolver Manufacturer. (at least they are in my opinion.)
I know a lot of people who will not buy a 480 unless it is offered in a single action package. Most prefer the Hunter Package, including myself. I would personally rather have a FIVE shot over a bulkier SIX shot.
When will Ruger realize that they are missing out on a large portion of the market? Hopefully soon.

I'm with you guys. A five-shot Ruger SBH in .480 would be the perfect hunting revolver, in my opinion, especially in stainless. I think Ruger could do it at a price most of us could afford, and give us a very durable handgun in a very efficient caliber. I have had the .480 Super Redhawk, and I just couldn't warm to it, as I simply prefer a single action.

If I remember right Ruger doesn't believe that the SBH frame or cylinder doesn't have the safety margin or size that they were looking for for some of the big (454, 475, etc). That was the reason for the SRH in the 454 and the 480. The new prototype had a different type of grip handle. It was a little different that a bisley grip. Remember that when a company makes something they want it to be "their" idea, not someone elses. Ego thing. If enough people ask for a new product they can give in. Look at the 44 mag rifle that was redeisgned and reissued (took a few years).
