You would think that a company that has had so much bad press over the POOR DESIGN of that trigger guard would have changed it by now*. I assume the ergonomic engineer quit before working on the Super Redhawk hammer spur and the Super Blackhawk trigger guard. Makes no sense when all of their other single action sixguns have a decent shape that will NOT rap one in the knuckles. My knuckles are safe from mine (SBH) because I have it hidden away with other guns that shoot that poorly!

* NOT Ruger, they obviously listen to NONE of their customers.

I have a Old 3 screw Super Blackhawk with the squared trigger gaurd and every time I shoot it it bites me!!! I have very large hands though, so I guess its to be expected. When I'm going to shoot it I put a Bandaid on with the pad at the top of my finger so that the bite is tamed somewhat. Or else I have shoot lighter loads than the Redliners I sometimes shoot out of it. wave

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Kyle, I used to get bit often until I put rubber grips on it. I have a large knuckle from shooting archery all my life and trigger guards do not get along with it.
If you want to keep shooting with the wood panels, take a file to the sharp edges of the trigger guard. Then use scotchbrite to remove the scratches. I shot some fellas one time and every time I pulled the trigger it would cut my finger. LOTS of blood before I finished. He was shooting at 10 yd's and missing so I asked if I could try his gun. I shot my loads from Creedmore and was bouncing a gallon jug every shot at 200 yd's. His eyes were big as saucers. I once put 6 out of 6 in a five gallon bucket at 400 meters. Can't beat them Rugers even if they don't listen to us shooters.

I'm with bfrshtr as far as my Redhawk (7.5") and SRH (9.5")are concerned, they are BOTH shootin sun-of-a-guns.
I shot the best group I have ever shot with a pistol and cast bullets at 50 ydswith that gun.

As a "typical" shooter I will always refer to that one group whenever I talk about what that gun is capable of!
After all it was capable that time!

I actually re-shaped my trigger guard to get rid of the dragoon tooth, shooting 330 gr bullets at 1200 fps from a 4 5/8" sbh will make you do that.

Still, that is nothing compared to knuckle smashing my SRH 480 can do when launching 460 gr @ 1100 fps. I found that properly gripping the gun has eliminated the smacked knuckles, but it will mash the un-initiated.

I have the Hogue grip on my 10.5" SBH silhouette gun. No smacked knuckles, but it's closely akin to hanging onto a 2X4. Haven't found a Pachmyer grip that fits the SS grip frames, but I quit looking a long time ago. The blued frames are easier to fit. Of course, then you may have to worry about the portion of your hand between the thumb and first finger getting rubbed from the recoil.

325 grain LBTs at 1100 to 1200 fps out my SBH Predator quickly cease to be fun.

My 44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk 5.5"er does not have that spur. I bought it new so nobody filed her off either. But I have noticed that spur on others and didn't like how it felt in my hand. Never fired one so cant say it bit me, but I can see where it might.

The spur, (Dragoon) think that’s the name, was on the 7.5 and longer barrel if I remember correctly... Also, yours should have a shorter grip frame as well....

A set of Pachmayr Decelerator grips WILL cure the problem with the square backed trigger guard bite. The recoil will hit your hand a little different, more into the web of your thumb instead of "rolling" in your hand. They will contribute to a more consistant "grip" on the gun.
After using them a while, I went back to the factory grips, Just personal preferance. If you don't get "sloppy" with your grip on the gun, it won't bite anyway. A little "bite" once in a while just reminds me to pay more attention to how I'm gripping the gun.

Which means if everything else stays the same, and I am capable, it should do this everytime, right?

It seems to never work that way...Wink

I've heard people complain about that, but I've never had my trigger guard bite me. I had trouble with the grooved trigger chewing on my finger tip. I fixed it by swapping for a smooth trigger. Works wonderfully now. No bites. As far as the trigger guard goes, I have small hands which probably helps a lot. I shoot a 180gr jhp with 25gr 2400 for deer. Hot load with relatively mild recoil. Great on Iowa whitetails. Smiler

Don't you know that those light 180 gr bullets will just bounce off of the deer? Wink roflmao

Yea, I KNOW 180gr XTP's are great deer slayers
coming from a smoke pole, but it's hard to
convince any of them of that fact, either.

Are you using XTP's or another make? What kind
of primers do you use? I just inherited a
.45 Colt Blackhawk and want to work up loads
for deer hunting in eastern Iowa. I like your
way of thinking with mild recoil loads. Wink

Why did you get rid of your 10/22? I had the blue model for years until a friend wanted to buy it my mistake selling it. I bought a stainless steel 10/22 with synthetic stock it didn't shoot worth a darn so I sold it. I then bought a heavy barrel stainless target model with a laminated stock. It is the best most accurate 22 auto I have ever owned.

Got rid of the 10/22 because it was not accurate. I got spoiled with the Rem 581 I bought in 1967. Consistent 1/2 inch groups at 50 yds with Rem or Win Hollow points. The 10/22 could barely make 1.5 inch groups. Got a Thompson Contender Classic 22 auto. Accuracy is great, gun has great styling and NO MOD necessary. Trigger is great. The 10/22 also had a lousy trigger even though I had a triggr job.

To Dannoboone: sorry I didn't get back sooner. The 180 I use is a Remington. I don't use XTP's. I have a problem with Hornady's attitude. The primer is just a regular Winchester. I tried 26gr and 27gr 2400 with that bullet and got 4" groups at 50 yards. Groups shrank to 2" with the 25gr. and recoil lessened from the heavier bullets. I didn't see too much use in trying to better the group size at that point. That's well within the accuracy needed for deer at handgun ranges.
