I've looked into having my 480 SRH cut down as a packer. The shortest you can go and retain the factory front sight base is 4 1/2", though I was thinking of 5".

Check out the Bowen web sight. He expresses reservations about removing a SRH barrel. I don't know for sure, but have the impression that shorting a barrel requires removal for machining the crown, etc.

Talk to Jack Huntington, I discussed the project with him, and he addressed the issue of the barrel being glued into the frame. With some heat and care, it can be removed.

My assumption is, Hamilton is a busy man, and why tackle projects that can cause headaches.

Jack quoted me $100 to pull the barrel, cut, crown, remove stamping, bead blast barrel and cylinder for two tone look, then re-attach barrel and front sight.

The Bowen web site has a discussion of their recent experience with SRHs. The barrel threads gall leading to ruination of the barrel or receiver too often for comfort. Ruger is putting them on real tight.

A buddy put that idea into my head. I'm going to be shipping my Ruger 454 off to MNP for an action job and porting. I thinking of having the barrel cut down to about 5.5 to 6 inches.

Is there a special reason you want to carry the 454 as a back up?There seem to me to be many more options than to go through the trouble to have your barrel cut down.
Toris makes a .41 mag. with a 3 in barrel, many .357 mag cal. to chose from.

leelee, I have a FA 454 SCOPED W/7 1/2 BARREL
AND DONT WANT ANOTHER CAL. TO RELOAD (dies, powder, brass, bullets, time) AND I LOVE THAT 454,
JUST TOSSING AROUND THE IDEA.
MABEE I SHOULD JUST SAVE UP FOR ANOTHER FA IN A 4 3/4 BARREL (no scope)FOR THE HIP.
THAT JUST MEANS SAVE SAVE SAVE.
THANK'S

I have a RSR in .44 Mag with a 7.5" barrel that I just love to shoot. It is extremely accurate, but a bear to carry all day. Even with a shorter barrel this sounds like a beast to pack all day. For that reason I bought a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in .45 colt with 5.5" barrel. I can push a 300gr. cast bullet at about 1300 FPS without stressing the gun. This is pretty much all that is required for any game in North America and with a crossdraw holster it is so much easier to pack than my RSR. Just my 2 cents.

I contacted Mag na Port today and they said they have a pistol called the Advantage where they used a Ruger 480. Lady I spoke with said it was in the issue of Guns magazine a few months ago. Trying to find a copy since my gun will be sent off to them for a action and porting job.
