I just picked up a S&W 629-6 in 4 inch as my (off season/scouting/camping) woods carry gun and back up for fall Black bear season. I have virtually no handgun experience other than the Glock 17 that I have owned and shot for the last 15 years. I have never reloaded for a pistol but have been reloading rifle for 2-3 years. My question is whether the 240 XTP bullet and 23 grains of H110 (Lee manual shows 23gn@1413fps and 24gn@1522) are too much for the S&W. I read the recent post about stockpiling 240 factory ammo and one of the posts said that the factory Hornaday 300XTP was a bit too much for a S&W. Any help/recommendations/experiences would be appreciated as related to XTP's (240/300) and H110.

No, if I remember I used 24 gr in the S&W for silhouette with 240 gr bullets.
It is not the pressure but the recoil from heavy bullets that will beat the gun. Most heavy bullet loads will have less pressure where they are accurate but the gun comes back harder and the cylinder latch can float from inertia and unlock the cylinder. Then the pin in the center of the cylinder that unlocks the front lock can get peened making the gun hard to open.
Both would be easy to cure with a heavier cylinder latch spring and a hardened pin.
The newer S&W's are supposed to be beefed up.

4" load data

H110 == W296.

The book max is 24.5gr I believe, but someone can chime in if I'm wrong. 23gr of W296 gives me a hair under 1200fps with a 240gr XTP out of my 4" 329pd. I haven't loaded the 300gr XTP yet.

Well, at least have an OK day Smiler

I have used 24gr of H 110 and several different 240gr bullets for a hunting load.

I also ised quite a bit of 22.5 gr of {old} 2400 with 240gr bullets.

Over the years I have had to have my 4" tuned up twice, and my 6" once.

24.0 grains or there about of WW296/H110 and the 240 grain bullets have been a standard load for my .44 mags. Just make sure your revolver likes it.

Thanks everybody for your input. I only have H110 right now and the 240 XTP. I think that for now I will stick with the 240's and 23 or 24gn of H110, which ever is more accurate in my gun.
