Is anybody using the 10.5" Super Blackhawk for hunting? I was down at my local gun shop and they just happened to have in-stock a Super Blackhawk Hunter and a 10.5" Super Blackhawk (both in .44 mag). Call me crazy, but I thought the 10.5" model blanaced better. Any issues with the longer barrel? I realize that a holster may not be an off-the-shelf item, but anything else? I had a 9.5" Super Redhawk for quite a while, so the longer barrel is nothing new to me.

Thanks,

Jesse

bfrshooter has a SBH with a 10.5-inch (10-inch?) barrel, and it is one of the most accurate revolvers I have ever shot, bar none. bfrshooter, where are you??

Just came on. Yes I love it. I won't own a primary hunting revolver under 7-1/2" anyway because I like to shoot far if I have to. Plus the longer barrel gets the noise a little farther from the ears when hunting.
Short barrels are OK and are just as accurate but with open sights, adjustments are too course and each click moves the POI too far for me. The devil to sight in at the longer ranges.
With the 10" Ruger each click of elevation is 3/4" at 50 meters, windage is 1-1/2". At 200 meters it is only 3" and 6" per click.
Expensive sights with smaller graduations work better but everyone knows how bad Ruger sights are. They still work though.
It just depends on if it feels good too.

...... I have handled one and several Hunter models and in many ways I prefer the 10 " model ...
I just think it is totally cool ...

Thanks guys, that is what I wanted to hear. Now how do I get the stamp of approval from the wife. Big Grin

Anybody put a scope on a Blackhawk? Any problems with drilling and tapping the top strap? My eyes don't see too well, and to be fair to myself and the animal I would like to use a 2x scope.

Thanks,

Jesse

Mine is currently set up to shoot IHMSA. Wiegand makes a scope mount for the Ruger single-actions that was very reasonable when I first saw them. I haven't priced one recently, but don't think it would be outrageously priced even now.

Getting the blessing from the wife, that's an entirely different matter there, my friend. You would know best on how to earn the brownie points for that one.

I think that if I can find a decent used model for under $400 I can convince my wife that the purchase is a matter of great importance, bordering upon life and death. No, all joking aside, my wife is actually very understanding. I need to get a few items sold and I should be able to get the gun without any problems.

If you are going to hunt a lot in the early mornings and close to dark, get a red dot. Long eye relief scopes get VERY dark to see through.

One way I was thinking of combating the darkness of LER scopes was to go with a 2x28 Weaver. Anybody used the scope and know how bright it is?

I've subjected my red dot (an Ultradot 30) to bundles of full-tilt .475 Linebaugh loads (420 grain bullet at 1,350 fps), and it functions perfectly. It only weighs 4-oz and the best part is that it costs $139.00 shipped with a lifetime warrantly.........definite bang-for-the-buck!

I use a scope once in a while to work loads but the red dot goes back on for hunting. I have tried many scopes in the field and I just have to wait for full light, just like open sights.
By then the deer have gone by.
The maximum exit pupil your eye can use is 5mm. A scope with a larger exit pupil will allow you to see earlier and later because as light dims, the larger exit pupil will still put out 5mm because the scope gathers more light.
A long eye relief scope might start out with 5mm but the farther from your eye it is, the wider it scatters so your eye might only get 2mm. As you increase power, the exit pupil gets SMALLER. At 4X you are in need of full light and if you turn up the power the scope just gets darker. Even a 1X scope will have you looking into the heart of a black hole in low light.
A rifle scope needs at least a 40mm objective to shoot in dim light and 50mm is brighter. That is full use of 5mm.
The 28mm objective of the Weaver is not going to give you any brightness and I doubt you will have more then 1mm or 2mm at your eye in full light. A dark, dark, black hole in the dim light.
If all of your hunting is in full sunlight, it will work but don't try to hold 4X steady off hand either. 2X will drive you nuts. You will miss more because you will see all of your jitters.
The handgun is better with zero magnification unless you use a rest for every shot.
I have a 2X Swift on my .22 Mark II for squirrels. I have shot them in the head at 50 yd's with open sights but I can't hit crap with the scope even under 20 yd's. I need a rest and a GOOD one with no shakes.
A pistol scope is an abortion for hunting unless you can lock the gun down solid and have the light you need.

Oops! I meant to say the 2x28 Weaver scope! Sorry for the confusion.
