Just shot my old.....now my buddy's 350 Ruger SS at the range yesterday, HAMMERS game. 225 BTSP, 57/4320 I believe, 1st 2 in ONE inch at 200 yards! I am impressed! That gun is a keeper. I like 6.5's, 708, and 338, 358 bores. For targets varmints and even killed a few deer, the 6BR is big in performance for a little round. I think in terms of what I want to accomplish, and the efficient way to do it. Always would have been easier to do it all with an accurate 30-06 and 180 core lokts, but it would have been too boring for my mind! Hmmmmmm, a Ruger #1 stainless laminate, 599 right now at Lipsey's, in none other than 405! 41 bullets you say! A stomper to 200-250 yds I would bet!

on the 405, just educated myself a bit: http://www.gunweek.com/2004/feature0120.html http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ammunition/bully_041805/ http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger_No1_405.htm 2550 with a 210 pistol bullet! Ought to be a BOMB on whitetails! It really would FLATTEN a whitetail I would have to believe! Comments from field use? Obviously I was never aware of it's potential, but the 40 dollar per 50 brass is high! and that is 1.90 more dealer price than Retail at Midway! Go figure, retail is cheaper! I do see Hornady 300gr about 20 bucks for 50 not bad, but that seems like more gun than I need for my parts! Elk beware at timber ranges I can imagine! Boar and moose also, even bear.

This afternoon in the "used" bin at a local shop I scored 90 once fired Hornady .405 cases for..... $9.00. A pistol bullet fired at that speed would have the possibility of coming apart in a big game animal... I have a reduced load that runs a 210 jacketed bullet at about 1800 fps and it turned a Speer Gold Dot HP inside-out...and it stayed in a 2 gallon bleach jug...why I threw the bullet up on the bank I have no clue....I usually keep recovered bullets. $600 for that rifle is a great deal...I paid $585 for my stainless two years ago...didn't look like had even been fired. I then ended up with my friend's M95 Winchester after he want to get rid of it...and he gave me 9 boxes of factory ammo with the gun. Ruger is now making their #1 in 450/400...and they chose a bore diameter of.... .410! So I am sure that somewhere down the road someone will buy one, fire one round and decide he made a mistake...and I'll end up with another .41. These are my two .350s.... The M600 is for sunny days and the Ruger for rain and 4-Wheeling... With a .350 RM or a .35 Whelen you don't need any other guns...pistol bullets for small game and varmints and 250s for anything that walks/bites... The .405... Bob

Tasco Titan 1.5-6x42???

yep.... ...best scope Tasco ever marketed and that comes from someone who hated the junk that they sold.....Bushnell bought Tasco and is closing out the Titan line...at $120.00 I bought two. They go very nicely on the #1s... If you can find one buy it, you will not be disappointed. The other one is going to go on a 1 of 200 stainless #1A 7.62x39 I just bought. The long ocular end and long eye relief helps with the mounting/eye relief problem one usually runs into mounting scopes on #1s. Bob

Talley rings? Also, do you work the triggers on those #1's? I almost bought a titan awhile back, also missed a dang SS laminate on an auction recently, $649 for a 7mm08. It ended early am hours, so I missed out...... Also, I hear some Titans were mfg/stamped mfg JAPAN and others CHINA or thereabouts, yours were recently acquired, what's on yours? Thanks.

Wanre QR 30mm Ruger rings... As far as I know all Titans were made in Japan but I'm sure with Tasco anything is possible. It could be some of the other powers were but since all Titans have 30mm tubes maybe they were all made in Japan. I just bought these sopes last fall and yes they are both made in Japan. I just got a notice that they still have some left and may just buy two more to put away. I looked at a $1000 Schmidt&Bender 1.1-5 yesterday... From 1.1-2.5 it was like looking through a small fishbowl when you moved your head around...not impressed at all.

RJM, what load were you using at 50 yds? I was shooting my 657's with 210 SWC and 9.0 Unique the other day, surprised at groups, first time I used it at that distance, usually its 210XTPs w/20gr H110. Recoil much less, speed seems good but no chrono on unique-guessing 1100 or so in 6-6.5's, scoped now but going to irons on one of both for fun, weight, and handling. Any suggesions on good cast bullets to buy? Intend to use Universal Clays next, meters much better, seems less fouling/cleaner burning than Unique-just have to use a grain or two less so that even saves powder for equal speeds. Accuracy seems as good as unique using UC.

I use 8.0 grains of Unique at 950 from a 4" gun so you are about on the money with your guesstimate of speed... I use WWLP Primers and a Lee Factory Crip Die and put a good solid crip on all loads, Unique or H110, and the Unique burns very clean. I rarely shoot cast bullet any more if you mean for plinking/target loads. Almost all my ammo is loaded with Berry's plated bullets www.berrysmfg.com I shoot a lot indoors in the winter and the range requires plated or jacketed bullets. If you are talking a better grade of cast bullet, my favorites are: Cast Performance 255 WFNGC (22/H110) Specialty Pistol Gear 305 LBT (19/H110) Leadhead 230 Keith (8.0/Unique or 22/H110) My H110 loads are 23 grains with 200-220 grain jacketed bullets and 22 grains with heavy cast 230-265 grains...1350+- in a 5.5" barrel...work up from 20. Thanks a bunch for the info, I looked at the site and those bullets look good, price per 250 seems reasonable, and I bet there is not/any leading problem, as I got that the other day, and I remember how much of a pain it is to get it out of the barrel! In my youth, shot lots of full loads in 41 and 44 mag, often 2400 or h110 to the hilt, and in 4" guns, at dusk, the 44 looked like a grenade in my hand going off and I wondered why I was subjecting myself to that! Now I realize it is unnecessary for 98% of my shooting more more! Saves the gun, my ears, and my nerves/hands. Thanks again for all your help, RJM.

I am partial to nice compact 41 Special of mine. and, of course the 44 Special is a favorite too when built on the smaller frame.

NICEEEEE! Are those 44s on a 357 frame OM? OR single six like the 41 special? Really like those guns, tell me about the loads and performance you are getting with both 41 and 44 specials. Also, do you hunt with them? Assume you have/will. Also, NICE grips, tell me what they are, stag and some exotic wood. Btw, those are 2 different 44's right? Who did the work on those nice guns?

Thanks. The 44's are built on OM 357's. Hamilton Bowen built the Flattop while Alan Harton built the "Single-Six Topped" one after a fair amount of welding and machining. Doug Turnbull did the case colors on both. The 44 Specials use either 6.5 grs of Unique or 16.5 grs of 2400 under the 250 gr Keith SWC. The Bowen gun is a recent acquition and has not been hunted. The other one has taken a deer, 2 hogs and a few coyotes. The grips on it are made from stabilized (resin injected) spalted (rotten) maple. The 41 Special was built by Alan Harton as well utilizing an oversized 5 shot cylinder. I load the 215 gr SWC over 5.5 grs of Unique for 825 fps. That's near 45 ACP ballitics in a very, very lightweight gun. It is a line bored piece and is wonderfully accurate with sub-1" groups at 25 yards the norm if I manage myself. I have taken small critters (jack rabbit and armadillo) with it and would not hesitate to use it on the small Texas whitetails I help a friend cull each year. A few more photos. Machining for the new centerfire firing pin arrangement after welding up the original rimfire hole. Ready for regulation. The custom cylinder, All fun stuff for sure....
