does this type of gun recoil more than a taurus m44 with a 8in barrel with muzzle break????? my brother has a taurus and the recoil is not that bad..... thanks fore the help gate
I've had a Blackhawk in .41 Mag and a Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag. The grip style of the single action revolver is very good at taming felt recoil. The gun tips up and back quite dramatically, with full house loads in ends up about beside your ear . It LOOKS painful and hard to shoot, but it is actually nicer than a comparable caliber in double action. It just doesn't hurt. Look at all the big single actions from Freedom Arms like .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh, etc.
No the recoil is not bad at all, just kind of"rolls".I have a bit of respect for the .41,,watched a blackhawk in .41 best a .44 mag s+w revolver in every way one day shooting stuff around the farm junk pile. Happy Shooting!

I LOVE the .41 mag.blackhawk. I broke a transfer bar on my 7-1/2" Super Blackhawk on the silhouette range once and had to switch to my 4-5/8" .41 mag. as backup. Kinda wow'd 'em knocking down 200 meter rams with the little shorty .41 that day.
It's a helluva good round and a good revolver to boot.
I'm a bit of a softy i guess. I can't handle the plowhandle grips on the SA revolvers. My first move now is a set of Hogue rubber grips. With those installed, the 4 5/8" .41 Blackhawk becomes a very nice gun to shoot.
Hi gate, I have one of each that you mention plus a, Reeder Custom SHB 5 shooter, a Taurus 425 Tracker (S/S 4in barrel), and two 14inch Contenders all in .41RemMag. I also have a S/W 29 8in and a 10in Contender in .44 RemMag. I seldom shoot the .44s' because I don't like the blast and recoil of that caliber but I do shoot them usually 20-50 rounds a month justnot fun for me. I shoot my .41s' alot (I currently have 6 with a S/W657 Clasic Hunter ordered and on the way)about 100 rounds each a month. I just love that caliber. I have been a handgun only hunter since 1989 and my very first hunting handgun was a S/W 657 (.41RemMag) which I traded in 1993 for my first Contender also in .41RemMag (BTY my youngest son tracked down that Smith and got it back so he owns it now). I have found over the years that the .41 will do anything you ask of it whit less noise and less recoil. It will kill just as fast as anything bigger. It shoots a bit flater than the bigger handgun calibers. The only down side (for some people) is that it really is a reload for caliber. There is only IMO hunting load from a commercial loader and that I the Federal Hunting Ammo. Truley if your gun likes them it would be all you ever need, it is that good. I shoot the Taurus Rageing Bull and the 425 Tracker (carry the Tracker mostly)side by side with both the Rugers. My loads run from light stuff for new shooters and kids to very heavy hunting loads (250g - 280g with 19+g of H110)Which are all SAFE IN MY GUNS. The recoil, in the guns, is very manageable not at all what I would call heavy. They are different in the guns because of the porting which really holds the barrel down in the Taurus guns even the Tracker. If you fine the Taurus gun plesent to shoot you shouldn't have a problem with the Ruger.

I picked up one this spring and love it. As stated the factory grips suck. Hogues work wonderfully, but look ugly as hell on a SA. I got some Pachmayr Presentation grips for mine that look real good, fit my hand much better than factory and help tame the recoil. They don't work as well as the Hogues, but don't look out of place either.
I also am no lover of the standard Ruger gripframe. On my 4 5/8" .41 a friend installed a Super Blackhawk gripframe and it shoots just fine with the heaviest loads. When I found a 6.5" .41 a set of Herrett grips were already installed and have never been off. They also do a great job of dampening recoil.....Bob
