I am amazed by the amount of knowledge in this forum. You all know your stuff. As a novice, I have a large number of rounds loaded in a few different calibers. I'll list the loads, and, I'm wondering what you think of each one, and, what you would use it for. .500 JRH: Factory 950 fps, 440 grain LFN cast bullet the other factory load: 425 grains at 1350 fps? .475 Linebaugh 275 Grain Speer Hollow point, at 1450-1560 fps 325 grain Speer Flat points at 1450 fps .500 Linebaugh 350 grain LFN at 1350 fps 435 grain LFN at 1100 fps .500 Linebaugh Maximum 525 grains LFN over 29 grains of 296: chrono said 1350 fps, but, it might have been off?

You could probably shoot anything you wanted to with those. -------------------- THANOS WAS RIGHT!

I would use those for deer and Hogs... anything bigger i may use a 400g bullet. but that may be just me... My son thinks a 325 grain Speer Flat points at 1450 fps is good enough for anything. But … opinions differ. T

I had the 275's loaded as a 24/7 load for the gun around the house. I think it would probably work VERY well for it's intended target use. The 325's we got as blems from Midway, 12 or 13 bucks for 50, so bought 600 or so. They seem to be a better match for the caliber. Less preceived recoil and blast then the 275's, but, they have a fairly thick jacket, and I think would do in deer or hogs. Pleasant to shoot, and easy to hit with.

The reality is that a 300gr bullet at 1,000fps will go through about any beast -- an Elephant skull excepted -- so any of those rounds, properly placed will down anything on the planet. You can always pick the most perfect round for a particular situation, but any of those will do fine for you most of the time -- although they would all be serious overkill most of the time as well. I have shot the 500JRH some and the Linebaughs that said I wouldn't be afraid to take on anything in the lower 48 with the JRHs 440 at 950. I'll say this my experience this year with ,my new 475 right whit?,with a 420 in the 475 I'd stand straight up with anything on planet Earth, except the wife when she's mean. But the one I'm wanting to really get my hands on and play with is the 500L with that 525 load at 1100.I'd be ready to invade other planets and take on tanks and "If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' someone else's dog around" unknown cowboy

Haha! Seems everyone has a sense of humor when it comes to my guns! But that 420 at 1,350 is darn near perfection...... "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." Darn, I forgot the 300 rounds of factory 400 grain XTP's that go 1350 chronographed out of my FA83 converted to .475 by Jack Huntington. Excellent, fast barrel on that gun, with that load.

I have about 100 rounds of 525's with 28-30 grains of 296, IIRC. They chrongraphed 1350 fps. I'd like to try that bullet at 1100 fps, and see if I might be able to hit an elephant with it. 525's are not for the faint hearted.

jwp475: What load are you using for the 525's in the Linebaugh, standard case?

Anything from .45-.50 and of course I'm referring to solids, not expanding bullets. The point is only that a moderately sized lead bullet travelling at moderate velocities, properly placed, is more than enough for almost any hunting. A poorly placed shot is not, of course, adequate for any kind of hunting, but there's no harm in going heavier or faster if that's what floats your boat -- it's just not usally really necessary. I shoot bigger and/or faster stuff a lot myself -- but, except for African dangerous game or big big bears, I know I'm generally over-gunned when I do that. I DO love to shoot 170gr expanding bullets at 1950fps for whitetails, however, and I'm not likely to give that up anytime soon, no matter the logic. Any idea WHY these are so effective, at even 1100 fps?
