He's a bear! I shot a bear while deer hunting today. I estimate him to be somewhere around 150 lbs. I shot him at about 30 yards through his left shoulder with my .44 Mag Contender. He ran about 30 yards and piled up. Upon examination, the 240 gr Nosler JHC passed through the heart and lungs and lodged just under the hide on the opposite side forming a perfect mushroom. Anyway here he is...

Excellent x-caliber!! Good job! Are you going to turn him into a rug? "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." JWP If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming. Semper Fidelis "Building Carpal Tunnel one round at a time"

Way to go, and who cares if he is not big? There are a lot of hunters that have never taken a black bear, let alone with a handgun. When you get the skull out, let me know what size it is. Mine was 17 inches that I just took in Maine. I can't wait for next year to go back black bear hunting. Again congrats on the bear. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. Thanks guys! We are covered up with bears in North Ga. I killed my first bear back in 1992 with a bow. I had a rug made out of him and the price tag was $500 back then. I wasn't crazy about the meat and I understand the price tag for a bear rug is now closer to $1,000. For these reasons, in addition to the remote terrain that I normally hunt and the difficulty involved in getting a bear out, I have never shot another one. However, for the past few years, I have literally seen more bears than deer. I'm not a biologist, but I thought that a little population control was in order and this one was pretty handy to get to. I plan on taking one per year if the situation presents itself. Thanks again guys! Darrell

How about a shoulder mount, Darrel? Taxidermy isn't cheap -- rather good taxidermy isn't cheap that's for sure! "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." A tanned hide just hung up looks cool also, no rug, just the hide. The cost is not bad, just to have it dry tanned. My 100 and 175 pound black bears are full body mounted, my 206 is going to be a shoulder mount. Hopefully next year I get a bigger one and I will have another full body mount done. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member

Now you are talking! That is the reason my first freezer deer was a button buck. Scott shot a nice 6 point but is giving it away. There are trophy hunters and meat hunters, I am a meat hunter and would love to have a bear that size. Even an old squirrel is a pain in the butt!

I have killed many nice Ohio bucks but would never spend money for mounts. I tossed the antlers to my daughters to make things from. No regrets at all. They are just deer and to eat what I kill is more important to me. I will never see the need for the biggest buck in the world or any trophy. Any GOOD eating animal is a trophy in my book. A doe is harder to get a shot at then any buck and will test your ability. Yes, there are more of them so some consider it easy but I will bet more does have evaded getting shot then any buck. I have never had a buck jump my bowstring! Young deer are easy and stupid but are still the best to eat. A mother doe is extremely hard yet still tasty. A buck in rut acts even more stupid then a fawn. Track down and shoot an old doe in the snow with a bow or revolver or shoot a big buck from an elevated house over a food plot full of receptive does and tell me what you are more proud of! Who is the better hunter? Who is a hunter and who is a shooter? It is a bigger thrill to shoot a pop can at 200 yd's with a revolver then it is to shoot a buck at 200 yd's with a rifle from a rest in a HOUSE! Sorry for the rant guys, but I can kill all the deer I want from my deck or from a picnic table in my back yard. I don't consider that hunting at all. I won't even shoot a squirrel from the yard and it is full of them. Even in a tree stand, you are in the open and deer will catch the wrong moves or sounds. I don't even like a big single shot from a rest at long range. I still shoot deer close up and personal, off hand with them, just like a revolver or a bow.
