For 475 Linebaugh 400-grain factory ammunition what is acceptable rule of thumb for velocity reduction from 7.5-inch barrel to 4.75-inch barrel? *** Reloading bullets for chronographed muzzle velocity of 1100-1150 fps, which bullet expands more rapidly at impacts 20 feet from muzzle: Speer 400-gr Gold Dot or Hornady 400-gr XTP/HP? Is the difference in rapidity significant -- that is, is the more rapidly expanding bullet tremendously quicker and more violently expanding, or is the difference merely a nuance? My buddy and I each shot a cow elk in '03 with our 6" barrel .475 FAs. He used the 400 grain XTP and I the Speer 400 grain GD. There was little if any difference in expansion or performance between the two bullets. Based on my experience of shooting these bullets at different velocities, it's merely a nuance. Others may have had different experiences and I'd be interested in hearing them. If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. I'm only going to address the first part as I have not used any expanding bullets on game in my .475, but that Hornady 400 grain XTP .475 load only runs 1,250 fps out of my 7.5-inch barreled SRH. I would imagine that out of a 4.75-inch barrel that load would run somewhere north of 1,150 fps. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." I have recovered 4 .475 XTP's from bull elk, Argentine water buffalo and bison. They expanded to between .690" and .750 ". I have never recovered most .475 bullets, whether XTP, Speer, or 420 cast from bears, boars or buffalo and bison, due to full penetration. I stopped using my original prototype .475 Speer bullets sent to me by Terry Thompson at Speer for evaluation, when the XTP was introduced a few months later, because the XTP was more accurate in my first .475. I have never tried the Speer in my others, acquired since then. I have never used factory ammo in my .475's. I run my 9" @ a bit less than 1400, my 7 1/2" @ about 1330 and my 6" @ about 1275 fps. | |||
