Deer sniping with the .309JDJ

In deference to bfrshooter, I sniped a nine point this afternoon. I was hunting the same place the eight point came off and boy was it windy; steady winds of 17 mph with gusts up to 32 mph. The deer came out into the field at 5:10, about 200 yards down the treeline from me. I glassed him and immediately spotted antlers. I also immediately noticed he had winded me, but could not tell where I was; I did not give him the chance to figure it out. About fifteen seconds after I glassed him he was on the ground. I was using my .309JDJ Contender and shooting off my backpack. The bullet used was a 150 grain Nosler BT. I hit just inside the of the left shoulder with a front facing presentation. The bullet exited and cut the last rib on the right side. He ran about 45-50 yards, I watched, before piling up. I cleaned and quartered him in the field, with a pack of coyotes in the not too far distance.

Where did his body go?? Big Grin Fine buck, Hitman! Congratulations! That's obviously a really good spot for bucks. You've done us proud! So was it a two-hundred yard shot? Nice work, Hitman. thumb

Yes, it is a good spot for buck and yes, it was a 200 yard shot. I was by myself and had to clean and quarter to get him out of the woods.

Thanks, he's the 60th Whitetail deer I've taken with that barrel. I even shot him from the ground, although I was laying behind my backpack when I did it.

MS, I done tole ya that you da man in my book! jumping
Great shot! Nice buck.
I just like revolvers better because of archery hunting most of my life. Deer do not excite me unless they are close and even then I fail to get the blood pumping anymore. I guess after over 360 deer kills, excitement gets lost. They just don't bother me at all.
Then the thought of having to butcher again! Mad Ask Marko how much I hate it. He sticks me with too much work because of where he lives. I am happy to help him but I love to see him with a knife in his hand! dancing

Nice buck and even better shooting! thumb

The 150 grain BT is a fantastic bullet for the .309 JDJ as it opens well even at lower velocities and penetrates more than sufficiently. I've used it to take countless hogs with a bull-barreled 20" .308 WCF that pushes the 150 NBT at 2780 fps.

Again, congrats on a terrific shot...
