Just picked up a Taurus Tracker 4" 41 mag to carry as a back up gun while on my black bear hunt in Idaho this June. Went to local stores (Cabelas & Sportsman Warehouse) for ammo. All I can find here in Phoenix locally is Federal Fusion 210 JHP. I was hoping DoubleTap carried the 41 mag but no such luck.

Crossroads Of The West Gun show is in town next weekend so I am hoping the guy I buy ammo from has 41 mag, but I do not recall seeing him have it at his table.

Anybody out there recommend a certain factory load and where I can order it from?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Welcome to the forum, Ed! Member jwp475 who posts here frequently has been testing a lot of .41 mag ammo over the last couple of weeks and I believe that he had a lot of positive things to say about Buffalo Bore's 265 grain loading -- he'll come on here later and give you a better report that I can. I love Double Tap's ammo as well, but Buffalo Bore makes great ammunition too.

Buffalo Bore does indeed load the highest performance 41 Mag load that I am aware of

All of the following loads were chronographed in my 4" M-57 S&W

170 grain JHC------- 1536 FPS

230 grain SWC------- 1338 FPS

265 grain WLFN------ 1266 FPS

The 170 grain JHC and the 230 grain SWC shot to the same sight setting in my M-57 and the 265 grain is dead on for windage, but shoots rather high in the elevation department.

If I were you I would take a hard look at the 230 grain load for Bear protection it penetrates nearly as good as the 265 grain, yet still shoots to the same sight setting as the 170 JHC and the 210 grain Remington JSP which only chrono'ed at 1303 FPS...

Hope this helps....

I believe the cylinder on the trackers is rather short. I haven't got one here to measure as I went with the S&W357PD. I'd be willing to bet the BB 230gr.SWC would fit and more than do the trick on black bear if needed for backup.

I measured the cylinder on my Titanium 41mag Tracker and an overall length of 1.625" would put you right at the end of the cylinder with no room for bullet jump. For factory ammo, I've had excellent results with Winchester. Both the 175 Silver tip and the 240 Platinum Tip.

For bear back-up duty, I would want the heaviest WFN that would fit.......JMHO.

The Winnchester loads are anemic when compared to the Buffalo Bore fodder.... Especialy the 175 grain Silver Tip....

I tried the Buffalo Bore loads in my Tracker and they just don't shoot well. My gun has proven to be extremely picky about ammo. This is especially true with cast loads. About the only cast load that will consistantly shoot well is my plinking load of 5.5gr Trailboss and a 215 SWC.

I agree that a heavy WFN would be best though. I've tried the 250gr Federal Castcore with that thought in mind. The factory load didn't shoot well, and the same bullet in handloads is proving to be problematic as well. I just need to find one that my gun will shoot.

In my taurus titanium.

The winchester platinum tip chronied 1136 and the federal castcore chronied 1050 average.

I have loaded 265's to 1115 and 293's to 1075 in it.

I would expect most any 210 bullet would do fine for a black bear. Idaho bears are not know for being all that heavy that I am aware of.

I just like the way heavy, flat-nosed hard cast bullets penetrate.

I have a friend with the stainless Tracker and buys his 230 Keith bullets from the same caster that BB does...and JoeMac is right...they will not fit in the chambers if crimped in the regular crimp groove.

The Federal 250 CastCore will have less recoil that the other penetrator rounds as it isn't loaded quite as hot. If you want the same bullet with a little more velocity try the CorBon 250 hardcast...

All this 41 mag talk I had to load up what cases I had left. It was only 50. I made 10 265 grainers and the rest are 215 SWC. I bought a bulk box of 500 215 SWC for 42.00 a couple days ago.

I use the 210 grain Silvertip loads (.44 mag) in one of my M29s for defensive purposes. They get substituted for 320 grainers in the field.......
