Okay, here's a thought. I saw where the BFR should be availible in 50 AE. What about trimming down 500 S&W cases to 50 AE length? I haven't looked at the BFR in 50. Maybe it would need a couple of turns with a custom reamer to make a spot for the rims? Then you could have an $850 regular length 50 with a rimmed case. None of my reloading manuals covers the 50 AE. What is the case diameter at the base and neck? I'm wondering if it would be close enough to use 500 S&W cases? Thoughts?

I think the 50 AE case is bigger O.D than SW 500 Sean

Magnum Reasearch will make a 500 JRH cylinder for the 50 AE guns. The JRH is a 1.4 inch case with smaller rim than the 500 Smith has.The cartridge was designed by Jack Huntington to fit in a Freedom Arms revolver.Buffalo Bore loaded the factory ammo and it can be purchased from Jack Huntington @ 530-268-6877 _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Sounds just like what the Dr. ordered. Is the JRH the same case dimensions as the 500 S&W only a smaller rim?

I could be wrong, but I think the JRH has the same rim as the 500 Mag (it's just the S&W cut back to 1.4"). Lee Martin http://www.singleactions.com

The JRH is a shortened 500 Smith as well as a smaller rim diameter. The 500 Smith rim was too large for a Freedom arms Revolver.Freedom arms asked for and recieved some 500 JRH case's from Mr. Huntington and is considering chambering this cartridge in their revolver's. _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

A responce from Magnum Research. "the cost of the 50 AE 7.5" barrel from us is $899.99 plus $300 for the 500 JRH cylinder fitted and $40.00shipping to your dealer." I'll have to ask them to see if they can make it to accept the 500 S&W rim as it might be much easier to just cut down S&W cases. They say turn around time is about 2 weeks and you can buy direct from them.

If they will not chamber to accept the shortened 500 Smith contact Jack Huntington @ 530-268-6877 and I am sure that he could modify the cylender to accept the 500 Smith rim diameter which will most certainly work in the BFR _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

I really do want to get a 50 something, but I found a 475 BFR for just over $600 I may go that way instead.

The 475 is a tremendously effective cartridge. You will be very pleased with it's performance on game.I do believe that the 500 is a step up in impact reaction on game but with that being said there are no flies on the 475 as I own a 500 Linebaugh,a 500 JRH,and 3 475's _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

JWP, your an insperation. Why worry over decideing which one to buy. Just buy them all. I need a better job. I've also been thinking about getting one of the 4" 500 S&W's. I handled one at the farm store the other day and it seemed to balance fairly well and felt real good to hold. It would probably make a nice packin gun. Maybe just abit bigger than the 480 Alaskan. Hey guys, well I got the 475 BFR. Now I just have to wait for it to be shipped. Sean, could you send some notes on your favorite/accurate 475 loads? light and heavy. idahobronco@aol.com Dan says you have bought more than a few molds from him. Any of those work well? I have the Lee 400gn mold and a 500gn mold from Dan for the 470 NE. I'm thinking I may want something like a 350gn Keith??

Okay, here's another question. Will a Houge Mono grip for a blackhawk or super blackhawk fit on the BFR frame? Anybody tried it? Lee?
