What powder would work for a 243 cal. - with a 14" barrel ... I think I would need a fast burning one .... I shoot .... 55, 70, 95 grain bullets ???
Anyone out there with experience in such a load ?

I'm not concerned about velocity ....... but blow out ... which can "tip the bullet" according to Hornady .... and affect accuracy. Slow burners will be burning as the bullet exits ... Ideally all powder will be burned just as the bullet exits the barrel ? ........

I have used powders as slow as 760 in .30-30 cases for my Contender. Also, use to be the match director for the local silhouette club. One shooter was using an Encore in .243 and he just shot factory Remington green box ammo. This combo shot very well for him. I checked the Hornady manual and they are showing charges for the Encore very similar to what is found in the rifle section.

So I'd try a few and see what the gun likes.

Pag,

In my honest opinion, when customers come into the shop wanting custom ammo made for their 243 class handguns, I use only two powders, for bullets under 80 gr. I use H-380. For Everything heavier I use H-414.

Varget will work well but the 243 case is a bit to large for that powder, it works great in the 223 with heavies and the 22-250.

As far as using faster powders in handguns to get better performance and accuracy, from the testing I have done, this is another myth that has just hung around.

If one powder produces the highest velocity in a rifle, nine times out of ten, it will in a handgun in that same round as well.

Dealing with the problem of muzzle blast affecting bullet stability, I have heard this as well, and from some shooters that are very experienced, I personally have never seen this, even with the 7mm RUM in a 15" barrel. That barrel does have a Holland brake so that may prevent any blast problems.

Basically, the best rifle data will generally be the best handgun data.

Good Shooting!!!

I would second all of Fifty's comments and also wanted to mention that H414 is also outstanding in my gun for the 85 gr bullets .

I have also had very good results , both speed and accuracy , with RL 19 under 100 gr bullets. As to the notion that heavier muzzle blast could affect accuracy , I haven't seen that with the RL19 loads ; they will hold 1 moa clear out to 300 yards , which is as far as I've tried it . Muzzle blast IS very substantial with RL19 .

Muzzle blast with the H414 is not bad at all .
