This year I bought a scandium S&W in .41 mag as a backup gun for bear hunting with a crossbow. I didn't even get to go hunting again after I picked it up. Crap happens. Now I have a year to prepare for my next hunt and I'm very interested in having my pistol ported to reduce jump? and recoil. I don't know a better term than jump. I'm not a pistol guy. Most of my rifles have muzzle brakes and I hunt with hearing enhancement/protection nearly all the time now. What do I need to know about porting and who can you recommend? I'm off to Seattle/Portland in the morning, but I'd love to come back an find some sage advice regarding porting. Thanks.

I'm just curious, but have you shot the gun as is yet. My titanium Tracker came form the factory ported, and yes it does help recoil, but it's a compromise. I shoot a lot of cast bullets, and the ports collect lead and are a pain to clean. Given the choice, I would have an unported barrel.

That said, I have heard good things about Magnaport.

I never gave solids' fouling a thought. I haven't even shot the gun yet. I doubt I'll ever shoot it much but I'm assuming I'd prefer it ported. A friend gave me a box of solids. I suspect I'd just use jacketed bullets if I got it ported.

I was at the SHOT Show last weekend and stopped in the MagNa-port booth. They had a M329 that had been ported. I believe he told me that it was a two step process as they have to pull the barrel and cut the ports in the alumnium shroud separtate from the inner barrel as the ports in the shroud are larger than the ones in the barrel....

I have both a M357 and a TiTracker. Shot both with full loads last night for the first time and didn't really notice any control difference between the two. The .41 Magnum with full loads is a lot more controlable than the .44 Magnums are...
