I recently received another fine mold from Tom at Accurate Molds -- his 41-240V. Out of my range scrap, it is dropping at 258 grains. I did not go with a gas-checked design as I wanted a bullet I could push to 950-1,000 fps without leading concerns -- and I can always powder coat if I want to step it up.
I am starting out at 8.0 grains of Unique, which should keep it in the 900s -- pleasant to shoot, but plenty capable of doing some work on the terminal end.
Always a good day when another small box from Utah arrives at my door.

I’m a huge fan of the 41 Mag and found Unique to be my “go to” powder, with 8 grains showing very good results with many weights.
Here is a link with lots of 41 Mag loads and tips.

Nice looking bullet but.

I have had no trouble driving 210gr hard cast .410 through a few bears and deer.

If you get decent velocities from your pistol it well work just fine.

I know the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" but as casters + hand loaders we are even worse than shutterbugs (I know, I'm one of them too), there is always something more to play wit h. + yes Pdog, I use linotype on mine.

I've been a 41 magnum nut for over 50 years & like many here seem to use 8.0 grs of Unique a great deal with about every cast bullet I own, it just shoots great with all of them.
My most used bullet has always been a 230 gr Keith but I also use a couple of 250 gr bullets & recently used one on my Gemsbok in South Africa. Actually it was a 255 gr & was a Cast Performance bullet. I had just received my Miha mould & was having trouble getting the bullet to shoot & was in a bit of a panic because I was running out of time.
Kelly Brost was kind enough to send me some he still had on hand & the difference I could see right away was the crimp groove was lower on his bullets than it was on my new bullets from the Miha mould.
I only had 2 days left before flying out of Salt Lake so I loaded up Kelly's very nice 255 gr bullets because they had been shooting great & headed for Africa.
The bullet worked perfect, breaking both front shoulders with an exit, dropping the bull straight down.

Heavy bullets in the 41 magnum are great penetrators, more so than 44 magnum bullets of the same weight. Out of the 40+ animals I've taken with the 41 magnum I've probably only recovered 3-4, not sure & they were probably HP's.

just order what you want from Accurate.
if you don't see what you want in the catalogue go to the design feature and E-Mail Tom for help.
don't call him he's like 90% deaf, E-mail and make sure you push the right buttons on the order form.
he will make what you order, not what you want.

Dick got his mold from Miha Privec.
the ones he used were from cast performance.

Lamar is correct, I used a Cast Performance 255 gr because I hadn't figured out the problem until just before I flew out, now I know what it was.
I also make the 230 gr Keith slug, I've used it for deer, elk, hogs, bears, antelope, etc. I used a bisley 45 for my Kudu, Nyla, Cape Bufflao & Zebra.

Great shooting. May I ask what kind of velocity you achieved with this load ? Thanks in advance.

It was right at 1,300 fps if I remember correctly. I could get more velocity using H110 but this load with 2400 was shooting so good I didn't have time to change anything. I also have a 270 gr mould from Todd Corder thats a dandy, at least it shoots great but I haven't taken any game with it yet. I also have a 250 gr LBT style HP that I think is the best of all of them. It has a long shank & should be a great game bullet, I'll find out this fall.
Took me 5 days to get the Gemsbok, they never stop running! Could have taken 5-10 a day with a rifle.

Wow! 258g at 1300 fps is a lot! I only get 1100 fps out of my 45 Super with Buffalo Bore 255g hardcast. But I only use that load for self defense against bears / lions when out in the wild. It's easier to carry but not as powerful.

Chuck

Chuck, mine was from a 10" barrel & the actual velocity was 1267 fps. As mentioned I could have got more velocity with H110 but the clock was ticking & I just didn't have the time to do any more load development & actually didn't need more velocity anyway.

I've always thought the 41 Magnum was a great round. My sons have a 454 Casull and 44 Mag. I'm more of a pistol shooter than a revolver guy so the 45 Super does what I need. Guns made for it are hard to find though.

Chuck

Chuck, the Super has gotten my attention recently. Thinking of fitting out a Glock Model 41 with an after-market barrel and stiffer recoil spring assembly. A 255-grain hard cast at even 950 to 1,000 is pretty authoritative clout on Lower 48 stuff, I suspect.

it's no joke.
I put a 225 with the same nose profile as shown above through both shoulders of a 250lb. mule deer at @50yds. out of my 4" 624.
rimmed acp type cases and barely 875fps.

wouldn't have done it but he was dumb enough to stand there looking at me like I owed him money.

Mike, I am familiar with the 45 auto rim as I use it in my 625 along with ACP rounds. The query was about the posting of a 624 (which is a 44 spl.) Possibly just a mistyped from Lamar. No point in splitting hairs, I'm sorry I brought it up.

Norman, I knew you were aware of the 45 AR, I have a couple myself & I'm sure Lamar does as well. Not sure where he was going with his 624 but he knows his way around revolvers.
Here's one of my favorite 45 AR's, built on a 3 screw 357 by Bobby Tyler, it's a dandy & has taken a few deer. Front sight is one of Fermin's (2dogs) narrowed to 1/10".

Dick that's a lovely revolver and I like that front sight. I also like your setup for shooting from supported back rest. Can you tell me the brand of chair you are using? It looks perfect for the task at hand.

Bill, that's just a short chair I picked up at Sportsman's Warehouse, I think you can get them anywhere. Mostly when hunting I just sit on the ground & use the Barranti/Sixshot sling without a chair, works great & it only weighs about 5-6 ozs.
You adjust it at home and then just carry it in your pocket, very fast to get into action.
I used mine on my Zebra in Africa but I was using my other gun, the 8.5" bisley 45, I just used the FA for a photo after I had shot the Zebra. The sling works great, you just flare your legs out to make it tight!
At the range I take a folding chair & foot stool most times so I have the correct heigth to make it work & I don't have to sit on the ground. Mike "Doc" Barranti sells a lot of the slings.

yeah 625 with a 4" barrel.

it rides with me on the wheeler all the time.
sometimes I call it 624 instead of 5 because of the shorter barrel length, and once you get in the habit... LOL

Dick those are some mighty fine looking guns you have. Good looking animals too.

Back in the 90's shooting lots of prairie dogs and coyotes several days a week at times year round and having back troubles. I always need a back rest of some kind.

Don't recall where I picked it up. Found one of those plastic chairs the legs stick into sockets. Know I got it free.

Just took the legs off, made up shoulder straps riveted on. And to hold a can of flea spray, some bungee cords and plastic trash bags. Used a GI canvas canteen cover. Sure made a dandy setup for my use.

Ww skinned and sold the hides. Kill 'em, bag 'em, spray in the bag and tie it closed, lay in the seat and strap the dead dogs down. One I didn't need help, but, two or three I had to get help to stand up. Even with three the load wasn't too bad if the hike out wasn't too far.

Seat was white, I sprayed it mottled gray, & brown for camo effect. Just drop it on the ground and set down. Kept my butt of the stickers and wet spots even in the snow. I could tilt it back like a recliner and rest up while looking. Just the right height to use a 21" Haris bipod.

It and other shooting items were in the Ram when it was stolen a year ago.

Just info to share about the seat.

George

George, most of the time I just take a small piece of leather or a pad & drop it against a tree or boulder to sit on & use the Barranti/Sixshot Sling & I'm ready to go. This makes an easy, lightweight setup that's really handy for a six gun.

Well I had a shooting session with the .41 and the Accurate 41-240V that was disappointing to put it very mildly. I was already discouraged that I could not chamber the rounds with the bullets crimped to the crimp groove, so after measuring the cylinder throats I found to the shame of Ruger and their cylinder gang reamers that my throats were .409 and a bit tighter in one cylinder. Of course, this simply will not do, so my cylinder is on its way to Henderson, North Carolina, where Doug Phillips will work his magic with his Sunnen hones and open the throats to an even .4115. I look forward to working with that big Accurate slug when I get the revolver back together.
Really liking that front sight you have on your 3-screw .45 AR, Dick. What a pleasant cartridge to work with.

Bill, Doug does excellent work. He’s done my 41, 357, and 45 Rugers. The 45 would cluster 5 shots and throw one 4-5 inches out. Now they all group together. Been considering sending my new 41 to him. Just waiting on my budget to catch up!
