The portion of deer season for modern firearms starts tomorrow morning just before 6:00 AM. I will be carrying my Linebaugh Custom in .38-40 WCF and my .375 JDJ Contender. The revolver will be stoked with the 200 grain LFN from Montana Bullet Works and the .375 with the 220 Hornady Flat Point.

I plan to take my nine year old with me, so hopefully we will see some deer.

I have an invite to hunt in MS this year and plan on going.

Are you from there?

I hunted yesterday in TN. I had the Model 57 in its shoulder holster and a .30-06 in my lap and was ready but no deer showed up on my side of the place. They did however where my guest was hunting and he got three..

All I saw were a couple hundred crows that chose to keep me company all morning. When I realized I would not be seeing any deer, I seriously considered trying to pick a crow off in the corn field at 300 yards with my rifle just to see if I could do it.

Shack, yes, I live near Jackson.

Things are going really well for the deer. So far I have not seen anything other a few squirrels. The season is new though.

The closest we got was this evening when my six year old and I were coming out of the woods. We jumped several that were at the edge of a field.

Oh well, that's hunting for you. Cottonstalk, I think the .375 JDJ is a bit much for squirrel; but you are correct, they are good eating.

MS, I was hunting down near Woodville/St Francisville area this weekend. Lotta deer moving Sat morning and Evening. Practically nothing this morning and I only heard 2 or 3 shots in the distance all morning so it wasn't just me not seeing anything Smiler.

My 14" 7-30 Waters Contender had to sit out this weekend because of some misfiring problems. Got a new hammer spring though which I'm pretty sure will fix it right up for next weekend otherwise it will be the 357 Max carbine again.

TC260,

I grew up in Natchez. Good luck with the hammer spring. Gotta watch kids for a couple of days, but the weather is crazy this week anyway. Not to mention that four letter word "work" that gets in the way of hunting.

All the best
