None of my loading manuals are current enough to have either of these rounds nor do I have any buddies with a linebaugh. I was hoping some of you would have some dealings with both and would be able to share the differences they have ballistically.

The difference with max loads is 150-200 fps,Do you have a specific bullet weight?I have both SRH 480-FA 83 475 w/xtra 480 cylinder,the 480 will do 1250 w/400cast bullet,the 475L will do 1420-1440 fps with same bullet.

I've put ~3000 round through my 480, and personally find it to be an outstanding round, and gun 7 1/2" SRH. I've fired several 475's, and 500's, but personally can't handle that level of recoil. Sure, another 100-150 fps doesn't sound like much, but when you push a 400 gr bullet faster than 1200 fps, or burn more than 21-22 gr powder, recoil climbs dramatically. I look at a revolver as an iron sighted gun for ranges of 50 to 75 yds, within that realm, a 400 gr bullet @ 1200 fps will be capable of taking any game animal I'll hunt with a handgun. If I need power, it's rifle time. I went from a 44 mag to the 480 with no problems, recoil feel was essentially the same, just a bigger push, but not a harder push. The 454, 475 and 500 are a whole nother ball game.

Yup, a man has got to know his limits. The 480 is a pussycat but a 475 takes a bit of determination and forethought. The nano-second that you allow your mind to wander, you're gonna git bit. Before I knew better, I would try to shoot that beast like my FA 454. Hah! Not even close. The triggerguard will peel some skin off your second finger knuckle(also used as an index finger by the numbnuts). The 480 is easy to handle whereas the 475 is something that you have to want to shoot full loads everytime to get used to it. It only took me 4-5 sessions at about 20-40 rds per session. The recoil on the 475 sends the un-ported barrel about 120 degrees from horizontal and it's right there right now.
