Finally getting serious about scoping my SRH .454 and would appreciate any experiance/advice. Go with a 2x scope or are there electronic red dot scopes that can take the punishment?

The Leupold 2x will tolerate the recoil. A lot of the red dot scopes (that cost $150+) will stand up to the recoil also. I can tell ya from personal experience that the El Cheapo red dots & scopes will not last long. One red dot that i tested about two months ago lasted 39 rounds. It started having problems with staying lit after about 20 rounds and at 39 the mount let loose. My personal pick for heavy recoiling handguns is the Leupold 2x.

A 1-4x Burris Signature PL didn't last 15 rounds on my FA 454 in a TSOB 4 ring mount. The Leupold 2x has lasted at least 1500 with no trouble. The Leupold 2.5-8x lasted at least 1000 rounds on my TC 15" .45-70 before being moved to a more apropriate caliber, my .309 JDJ. Never a hint of trouble with the Leupolds.
The Leupold pistol scopes are tough as nails. I have the 4x fixed power on my Thompson Encore in 450 Nitro Express (more than twice the power of the Casull) and it's gone 100+ rounds with no problems at all. I've had it on my Ruger Super Redhawk (454) and it worked fine there as well. I highly recommend any of the Leupold pistol scopes.
I'm using Leupold 2x on a 45/70 handgun and a 3x Burris on 357 Harret. No problems with either although I opted to use 3 rings on the 45/70. Also use Leupolds in 4x on 7mm Int Rimmed and a 2.5x8 on 260m XP, and 3x9 Burris on .223 handgun. All three work great for their application. Suggest lower power like 2x for larger field of view and less bulk to be affected by recoil. PS Red Dot lasted only days on the 45/70.
I talked to J.D. Jones about scoping big bore handguns, and he said that the Leupolds are the only scopes he recommends. 2x, 4x, and 2.5x8 variable. He said that all others they have tested have failed, but the Leupolds have all held up great.
